PURPOSE OF JOB:

Kansas City Public Schools seeks an accomplished professional with significant experience in marketing and communications, who will embrace and employ a collaborative approach. This position will relish working with and supporting a committed team, with an appetite for supporting KCPS's priorities, issues, strategies, values, approaches and colleagues. S/he will bring passionate commitment and enthusiasm for KCPS's values, style of advocacy, strategies and priorities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES: include the following.

Serve as Chief Communication strategist on KCPS initiatives, goals and priorities with focus on forward looking message and communications planning.

Set year-round strategy and execution plan for all communications utilizing multiple platforms with multiple stakeholders and audiences.

Engage collaboratively with Board and Executive staff to examine current processes to ensure transformational change.

Lead strong, vision-focused, service-oriented team of professionals across all aspects of media, internal and external communications, multi-cultural outreach, web design and communications, marketing, and parent and community engagement.

Manage the development and production of District marketing communications, including print and electronic publications, collateral materials, presentations, website content, social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, news media productions, advertising, media relations, and television broadcasts for staff and the community.

Build capacity of KCPS administrators and departments in communications by providing training on a variety of topics, including public engagement, marketing, and media.

Create and implement a marketing program that enhances KCPS's image in the eye of the public and elected officials, as well as the corporate and grant community, with a recognizable “brand” reflective of a school district on an upward trajectory.

Develop and maintain brand image, positioning, and messaging for KCPS; develop and maintain image and identity standards for KCPS.

Develop, coordinate, and monitor the crisis communication plan and implementation.

Organize press conferences and the release of information to the media and the public.

Develop and maintain working relationships with community leaders, organizations, and members of the media.

Build the social media strategy to enhance KCPS brand awareness and reputation.

Embrace and drive transformational change to how communications are delivered and how the communication functions support KCPS.

Organize and plan regular meetings of various KCPS advisory groups.

Successful record of publications and/or high-visibility media placements, promoting critical thought leadership and essential issue framing.

Conveys and executes the vision of the Superintendent around the critical work of engagement with parents, community and other district stakeholders.

Organize and plan regular meetings of various KCPS advisory groups.

Develop processes and systems for garnering public input and support on key initiatives and issues.

Communicate to the public the rationale for Superintendent and Board of Education decisions.

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Business or related field.

Five (5) years of accomplished strategic communications experience of increasing scope required,

Proven ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others across business units, functional departments, localities and disciplines.

Ability to create partnerships at all levels of KCPS.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent presentation, facilitation and listening skills.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of work year: 12 months (7.5 hours per day/5 days per week)

KCPS Defined Benefit Pension plan – mandatory 9% contribution is required from employee and matched by KCPS; Voluntary retirement savings plans are also available.
