ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

Since Columbine High School opened in 1973, we have established strong traditions and a culture of Rebel Pride. This pride is rooted in the fact that we are a close-knit family and community of learners. We are committed to high standards of learning for all students, valuing each and every member of our school community. We emphasize building strong relationships with every students. We expect personal and collective responsibility and promote high levels of engagement and performance in learning, which results in future life success.

Presently, Columbine serves 1700 students as a comprehensive high school in a suburban setting. Approximately, 20% of the student population is free and reduced, 27.7% is minority, 2.8% ELL, and 8.8% are enrolled in special education services. The gifted and ALP population is 21%. Our goal is to challenge each student and provide academic interventions for them when they do not understand. We have strong Advanced Placement program in which over 400 of our students take courses in annually. In addition, we offer an AP Capstone Diploma, which we are one of only a handful offered in the state. Special Education students and second language learners have the support of a caring and experienced staff. We are also working on implementing classes in which students can explore career pathways.

Student athletic and activity involvement is highly encouraged. CHS offers 23 varsity level sports with over 1000 students involved. We have a strong music program which includes vocal music and instrumental music. We have a theatre program in which students have the opportunity to participate in two plays, a musical and one act plays; students may also choose from numerous clubs to pursue their individual interests.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY Develop, implement, and support individualized practices for achieving learning outcomes for students with communication, cognitive, physical, and/or social/behavioral needs, based on the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA). This teacher will utilize evidence-based best practice and rely on frequent progress monitoring for programming adjustments. The Learning Specialist teacher will take a leadership role in collaboratively problem solving interventions for students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Design and implement specialized instruction in one-on-one, small group and large classroom settings.

Work collaboratively to plan and modify curriculum, team teach with general educators and to communicate the abilities and needs of special education students.

Develop, implement and review for appropriateness the behavioral plans for designated students.

Work in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team to conduct IEP and referral meetings, conferences, and to develop a multidisciplinary approach to the educational enhancement of the student.

Maintain ongoing communication with regular educators, school staff, students and parents.

Create a safe supportive and understanding environment for disabled students.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Hold valid Colorado teaching license with Special Education Generalist endorsement. If teacher is the teacher of record for a specific content area, the must meet content-area qualification, which could include the appropriate content endorsement, degree in the content area, Colorado State Board of Education-approved content exam, or 36 credit hours as determined by the district. Training emphasis in Learning Disabled/Perceptual Communicative preferred.

EXPERIENCE Experience/supervised internship in working with educationally disabled children. Training in understanding/interpreting educational assessments and prescriptive teaching. Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work with a multidisciplinary team in developing appropriate materials, facilitating inclusion, creating educational plans, and designing and implementing behavioral plans. Training and experience in working with students with a variety of, disabling conditions. Complies with the Special Education Department and district policies and procedures (e.g., Medicaid billing, accident reporting).
