  • Performs major and minor mechanical repairs to gasoline and diesel powered motorized equipment; may instruct or supervise helpers; and performs other duties as required.
  • Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently.

    Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours/week is equivalent to one year of experience, not one and a half years.

    To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
  • Experience and Training Requirement:
    (1) Four years of full-time work experience in or successful completion of a four-year apprenticeship program for auto mechanic in motor equipment repair work under a journeyman mechanic; or,
    (2) any equivalent combination of experience and training.

    Knowledge of:
    Practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the automotive mechanic trade; shop practices and methods; occupational hazards and safety measures applicable to the trade; principles of internal combustion engines and automotive parts and adjustment of specific types and makes of motorized equipment and accessories.

    Ability to:
    Operates motorized equipment; estimates material, parts, and labor necessary to perform an overhaul job; operates the various machines and equipment used in adjusting, maintaining and repairing motorized equipment; locates and adjusts mechanical defects and makes necessary repairs to motorized equipment; does welding and simple sheet metal and blacksmith work; makes working sketches and drawings; gives and receives both oral and written instructions.

    Physical strength and agility; thoroughness; accuracy; reliability; initiative; and resourcefulness.
  • Select Certification Requirements:
    1) Lift/carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs unassisted
    2) Lift/carry objects weighing up to 100 lbs assisted by another person and/or use of equipment
    3) Valid passenger-type motor vehicle operator's license to drive in the State of Hawaii.
