P-TECH Background

The P-TECH School Model is a groundbreaking public education reform movement, encompassing close to 200 schools around the globe.  Each school spans grades 9-14 and is a partnership between a high school, community college and industry partner, enabled through government funding.  Students at P-TECH schools earn both their high school diploma and a free, industry-recognized, two-year postsecondary degree, and participate in a range of workplace experiences, including mentorships and paid internships.  Upon graduation, P-TECH students are ready to continue their educations or stand ready to be first-in-line for jobs with their industry partner.  P-TECH schools serve primarily disadvantaged students, are open enrollment and have a relentless commitment to education access, equity and inclusion.

Through P-TECH, industry participation is gamechanger, with industry partners providing a range of activities designed to ensure that all students earn their college degrees and are prepared to enter competitive, entry-level jobs.  These activities include serving on the school Steering Committee, managing and implementing workplace activities from site visits and speaker and project days, to paid internships and hiring preparation.  The continuum of this work is designed to help schools connect what they are learning in school to real jobs, while developing future-proof workplace skills, including problem solving, communication and critical thinking.

IBM, along with educators, created the model in 2011.  Within the growing model, IBM serves as lead industry partner for 11 schools, with the other schools being led by more than 550 industry partners.  More importantly, IBM continues to steward P-TECH replication around the world.  IBM provides technical assistance across the model, and works to ensure the model’s implementation with quality, fidelity and impact.

IBM P-TECH Corps

We place Corporate Liaisons at each P-TECH school where we serve as lead industry partner.
