Reading Teacher

SUMMARY

Under the leadership of the Director of Academics, the job of Reading Teacher is established for the purpose/s of improving students’ success in reading by supporting the implementation of the National Common Core literacy standards and curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; developing and modifying lesson plans and materials to meet the needs of a diverse student population; modeling the parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals; maintains contact and communication with parents and Student Life staff; and works effectively with administrators, colleagues, and all members of the community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Advises student life staff for the purpose of supporting teacher’s expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
• Assists other teachers for the purpose of implementing the district reading curriculum.
• Supports student life staff with implementation of campus-wide reading initiatives.
• Assumes individual responsibilities as assigned by the administration for the purpose of improving staff knowledge and supporting student activities.
• Collaborates with school personnel, parents, and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
• Collects, analyzes, and prepares data for the purpose of interpretation and reporting to the district, state and federal agencies.
• When necessary, model best practices for effective Common Core curriculum literacy implementation for teachers and other staff.
• Develops and coordinates reading programs cooperatively with classroom teachers for the purpose of supporting teachers and ensuring student success.
• Collaborates with Title I coordinator, administration, and the Professional Development Coordinator to train and provide feedback for support staff (Title I aides, paraprofessionals).
• Evaluates students’ abilities in reading skills for the purpose of assisting in the diagnosis of learning disorders, developing remediation plans, and/or evaluating student progress.
• Facilitates professional development opportunities for the purpose of providing staff development and support to school staff including both student life and academic staff.
• Conduct non-evaluative observations of classrooms to monitor the use and effectiveness of literacy-related professional development.
• Furthers personal education via staff development, college courses, etc. for the purpose of staying current with the latest and best practices, and learning new theories and techniques.
• Instructs students (e.g. individually, small group) for the purpose of improving their success in reading and assessing reading concepts and proficiencies through research-based programs.
• Maintains confidentiality of all information for the purpose of protection of students, staff, parents and the district.
• Mentors classroom teachers and support staff for the purpose of supporting staff in the instructional process.
• Conduct non-evaluative observations of classrooms to monitor the progress of students identified as “at-risk” readers and provide feedback to students and teachers.
• Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.
• Provides assistance in selecting and administering valid, reliable reading assessments and screening instruments for the purpose of providing effective school programs to increase the reading skills of students.
• Provides proper care, management, and seasonable security for all district property in their custody (e.g. equipment, supplies, classroom facilities, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining inventories, and preventing damage and/or theft.
• Collaborates with librarian, administration and other key staff members to build and maintain a positive campus-wide reading culture through professional development.
• Assesses resource needs as they relate to curriculum, intervention and reading culture and work with administrators to procure funds necessary to purchase materials.

• Establish and maintain an engaging middle and/or high school learning environment conducive to student success.
• Promotes and support a middle and/or high school program with promotion based upon standards mastery.
• Examines student assessment data to  guide and improve instruction
• Promotes high levels of learning in an engaging and effective manner using a variety of instructional methodologies, curriculum resources, and materials
• Integrates literacy strategies into the instructional framework.
• Differentiates instruction to reach all learners.
• Advocates for student accommodations and services to ensure that IEP’s are being implemented with fidelity.
• Maintains and submit necessary records, progress reports, and grade reports
• Monitors and case manage assigned MD Online IEP’s
• Meet with students on your assigned caseload on a weekly basis
• Delivers pull out instruction that is compliant with student IEP’s
• Participates in faculty meetings, workshops, staff development programs, and other school-sponsored activities
• Participates in summer programming which may include direct service to incoming and returning SEED youth and curriculum work with colleagues
• Assists in general building supervision and discipline of students outside of the classroom
• Adheres to the professional and ethical standards as outlined in the SEED Staff Manual
• Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors’ degree in the related field is required
• Active teaching certificate (grades 6-12) is required
• Master’s in the related field and/or prior teaching experience is highly desired.
