SUMMARY
Under general supervision provides translation/interpretation of services, both oral and written, for Spanish speaking students and families in due process meetings, evaluations, home visits, and phone conferences.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Work under the guidance and supervision of certified educational staff to provide translation/interpretation (both oral and written) for Spanish speaking students during: Pre-referral process, special educational evaluation process, IEP team meetings, progress review meetings or conferences.
  • Home visits and phone conferenceswith certified staff presentwith Spanish speaking families.
  • Translate orally and in writing due process forms for Spanish speaking students in Federal Setting I-IV programs, upon request.
  • Create, maintain and record weekly schedule using technology based software system and provide to supervisor.
  • Attend and participate as an active member in scheduled ELL/Special Education Team meetings.
  • Promote a culture of respect, support diversity, explain social and cultural norms, de-escalate situations of personal conflict or confrontation, and enforces District policies and rules of conduct.
  • Monitors and maintains documentation, files, and records of interpreter services to students and/or families, educational staff; assures all required written reports are completed and submitted on a daily basis.
  • Communicates with parents, students and staff to convey pertinent information while maintaining strict confidentiality of personal information.
  • Provides customer service to parents and guardians, answers questions, and explains school rules.
  • Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
  • Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent's goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.
  • Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis.
  • At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.

CLASS DESIGNATION
Bilingual - Spanish: Assist licensed staff as an interpreter to facilitate the provision of health, education, or other services to non-English speaking, limited English speaking and/or bilingual/bicultural community members.
Community Resource: Assist in promoting the school or program by providing information to parents, visitors, and students.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Successful applicants will meet the criteria listed in the four (4) bullet points below:

  • Sixty (60) semester or Ninety (90) quarter college credits.
OR

  • Two (2) years of experience working with children or young adults. Additional education or training may substitute for experience, at the discretion of Human Resources. Related experience may also be considered, at the discretion of Human Resources.

  • Ability to secure personal transportation for travel.

  • Ability to pass the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) examination demonstrating proficiency in the Spanish language.

Candidates must also possessknowledge, skill, and/or experience with:
  • Speaking, reading and writing Spanish and English fluently, including understanding terminology in the areas of education, child development, special education, and disabilities.
  • Working with Spanish speaking culture and community.
  • Local community resources and regional community service programs for Spanish speakers.
  • Principles of record keeping and records management.
  • Personal computers utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Safety rules and regulations.
  • Willingness to train Minneapolis Public Schools staff
  • Maintaining composure, and working effectively under classroom conditions.
  • Reacting quickly to situations that could create personal stress and safety problems.
  • Communicating effectively with children.
  • Collaborating as a team member, with colleagues, staff, and community representatives.
  • Following verbal and written instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, clients, and community agencies.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Minnesota State Driver's License may be required. First Aid, CPR, AED and Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training is required within one year of hire. Must also pass ACTFL Exam for foreign language proficiency after hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a school and/or a general office environment, with moderate physical requirements; requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. Jobs in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree, long periods of working with computers, and working with educational staff, families and administrators.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
