REPORTS TO: Principal/Special Education Administrator

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
This position provides instruction and other educational supports such as case management to special needs students and assisting them in their academic and social development. Candidates should have experience with implementation of researched and evidenced based strategies and understand the needs of a diverse student population.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. License: Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with an LBSI.
2. Education:
  1. Required - Bachelor's or Master's degree in Education from an accredited college or university.
  1. Experience:
  1. Required - Two (2) years of successful teaching experience required.Preferred - Two (2) years of prior experience working with a diverse student population in an urban school setting
4. Language Skills:
A. Preferred - Bilingual Spanish

ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Plan and instruct students using District approved curriculum as appropriate based on student needsModify and adapt lessons and curriculum, as needed to meet individual student's needs and IEP goalsProvide direct instruction using a variety of techniques including individualized instruction, lectures, team teaching, co teaching, hands-on formats and other instructional strategiesCreate a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests, and abilities of studentsWork collaboratively and regularly with colleagues to ensure individual student's needs are metActively participate on problem solving and intervention teams to facilitate early involvement and resolution to learning or behavioral needsProvide case management of Individualized Educational Plan (IEP)Demonstrate considerable knowledge of current best practices, laws, including due process and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and interventions regarding the education of special needs studentsExhibit considerable knowledge of specific disabilities and familiarity with common children's mental health disorders, as well as specific strategies/interventions to use in the classroomSet and maintain appropriate standards of classroom behavior that are consistent with administration policies and develop rules for classroom behavior, which are enforced in a fair and just mannerEmploy a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involvedAssess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provide progress reports as required, and communicate with parents as deemed necessaryMaintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulationContribute to the decisions made by the district and building regarding facilities, curriculum, and professional developmentWork to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned studentsExhibit behavior consistent with the district vision, mission and belief statementsEstablish and maintain cooperative relations with others

OTHER PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attends and participates in staff meetingsAttends and facilitates IEP meetingsEnsures that teams are utilizing concepts of least restrictive environment and best practices with studentsDevelops data collection and data management systems; entering data into proprietary and other computer databases; analyzing data, identifying student needsAssist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policyPrepare for classes assigned, and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisorAssumes responsibility for his or her continuing professional growth and development by attendance at professional meetings, membership in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses, and by reading professional journals and other publicationsTakes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilitiesAssists in other areas as neededCompletes other duties as assigned

Technical:
  1. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google ApplicationsWorks effectively with data to increase student learningAbility to effectively use and integrate technology appropriately in daily workKnowledge of instructional technology (Smart Boards, Promethean Boards, Document Cameras, etc.)

Interpersonal:
  1. Maintains open and effective communication with administration, other staff members, parents and studentsPresents himself/herself as a team member when relating to teachers, students, administrators, parents and the communityDemonstrates and encourages respect for students, staff and parentsMaintains appropriate confidentiality when discussing student concernsMust be fair, supportive and unprejudiced when working with students and staffMust exhibit sound judgment in dealing with peopleAbility to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full-time, 180 days as defined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
