  • POSITION TITLE: Elementary Art Classroom Teacher

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:

    The teacher is the educational leader in the classroom and will ensure that the approved curricula are implemented in a way that maximizes student learning experiences. The teacher is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of all students within his/her teaching assignment. Consistent with the Michigan Department of Education and Battle Creek Public School Board policies, the teacher will work within an established framework for the delivery of educational services which support the Battle Creek Public Schools program. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the teacher will demonstrate a strong commitment to the planning for improvement process in support of student achievement.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The teacher shall perform tasks as are assigned by the school Principal. These tasks may vary from time to time with the evolution of the organization and may include but not be limited to the following:
  • Develops and maintains long range and daily instructional plans.
  • Actively pursues leadership roles in the school and promote leadership opportunities in the classroom.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the school improvement plan in order to improve student achievement and success.
  • Uses appropriate techniques to encourage active participation in decision-making regarding such things as classroom rules, organization and topics of study which communicate a caring attitude and trust of students.
  • Develops and implements a system for student recognition.
  • Promotes problem solving, cooperative negotiating skills and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Applies appropriate consequences for inappropriate student behavior.
  • Develops healthy self-esteem in students.
  • Structures lessons that encourage risk-taking in learning and model life-long learning.

  • RELATIONSHIP TO THE CURRICULUM:
  • Plans and manages the development of standards-based curriculum, instruction, assessment plans and strategies.
  • Assists in the adoption of curriculum resources that are consistent with the district"s curriculum. Assists with the textbook ordering and inventory for the school site.
  • Ensures that all textbooks are used effectively as a resource to meet curriculum goals.
  • Ensures that all substitutes have lesson plans.
  • Speaks and behaves in a professional manner with staff, children, parents, visitors, service people and others at all times.
  • Is prepared to flexibly adapt within the school setting to the diverse situations that arise in education.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of established district curriculum goals; establishes and communicates clear objectives to the students for all lessons.
  • Strives by instruction and action to implement the district"s philosophy of education, instructional goals and objectives and performance expectations.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis, provides progress reports as required and communicates with parents as deemed necessary.
  • Plans and supervises assignments for teacher aides, volunteers and student teachers and makes written evaluation as required.
  • Serves on building and district committees that develop curriculum and enhance instruction.
  • Contributes to the decisions made by the district and building regarding budget, facilities, curriculum and personal well-being.
  • Maintains records for such things as student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records and documents required by the School Board or Board of Education using prescribed formats.

  • REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with endorsement ZG (K-5 All Subjects) or Art teaching area or approval of the Michigan Department of Education
  • Bachelor"s Degree

  • ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to Building Principal
  • Supervises students enrolled in his/her classes as assigned by the building principal, aides, volunteers who have been assigned to his/her instructional area of responsibility.
