Job Summary

Practices within the parameters of the Florida Board of Athletic Trainers and follows both the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Maintains a presence at home athletic contests and practices and attends other post-season and home-hosted contests as directed by the Principal and in cooperation with senior leadership. Travels with the varsity football team to away contests and, as schedule permits, travels with the JV football team.

Essential Functions

Depending upon the needs of each school and their athletic programs, incumbents may perform some or all of the functions in the section below. Percentage of time spent performing essential functions may vary across position.

1. Supervises the role/responsibility of site-based athletic trainers in conjunction with District Athletic Director, the JSMP and the volunteer team physicians. Supervises and coordinates training for staff, conducts performance appraisals, makes employment and discipline recommendations, and coordinates work assignments.
2. Coordinates the athletic training services schedule including the facilitation of substitute athletic trainers including personnel coverage, as needed, throughout the District for illness, planned absence, and additional coverage for major events.
3. Facilitates enhanced athletic training services for high profile events, Gateway tournaments, and Middle School Championships.
4. Ensures athletic related injuries and injury care is appropriately documented. Publishes quarterly data reports on sports related injuries and sports medicine specific items from within the District. Identifies injury trends and recognizes areas of special attention.
5. Meets with school Principals and individual athletic directors and coaches, as needed, for feedback and evaluation of performance of site-based athletic trainer.
6. Participates in regularly scheduled Athletic Director meetings by providing statistical, organizational, and procedural updates.
7. Makes routine site visits to schools to observe, evaluate and mentor athletic trainers.
8. Assists the JSMP in planning and execution of the athlete screening program.
9. Assists the JSMP in planning and organizing continuing educational programs.
10. Works together with JSMP in planning and implementing specific goals, directions, objectives, and growth of DCPS Sports medicine Programming and Services.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Master's degree preferred.

Experience: Five (5) years as an athletic trainer in the secondary school setting. A minimum of three (3) years supervisory experience in clinical athletic training, outreach, professional, and/or collegiate or secondary schools.

Certifications & Licenses: Athletic trainer certification from the Board of Certification (BOC). Current certification in CPR/Emergency Cardiac Care for the Professional Responder. Registered with the National Provider Identifier Standards (NPI)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of techniques used to diagnose and treat sports related injuries
• Knowledge of sports injury preventative measures
• Strong skills in assessing and treating sports related injuries
• Strong skills in mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electricity, sound, massage and the use of therapeutic exercises, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs
• Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Strong word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software skills
• Strong presentation development and delivery skills
• Ability to assess, manage, treat, rehabilitate, and recondition student athletes within the professional preparation and education of a Certified Athletic Trainer
• Ability to evaluate athlete readiness to play
• Ability to evaluate and assess sports equipment
• Ability to develop and manage budgets
• Ability to travel with the varsity and junior varsity football teams to away contests
• Ability to handle high amounts of stress associated with injuries
