  • POSITION TITLE: Band Director

    PRIMARY FUNCTION:

    Direct and manage the overall program of instrumental music for Northwestern Middle School. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state and district requirements. Develops musicians, prepares them to excel and motivates them to participate in band at the high school level. Plan activities to achieve district, region and state recognition.

    MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Program Planning
  • Direct middle school instrumental performers
  • Provide for band participation at extracurricular events including concerts, football games, pep rallies, and parades.
  • Arrange transportation for events
  • Comply with federal and state laws.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs
  • Recommend policies and improve program
  • Applies appropriate consequences for inappropriate student behavior
  • Develops healthy self-esteem in students.
  • Controls the storage and use of school-owned property


  • Instruction
  • Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required
  • Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences with varying abilities and talents
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, recitations and instruments that reflect understanding of the learning styles, varying levels of talent and needs of students assigned.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal recitations


  • Classroom Management
  • Apply appropriate consequences for inappropriate student behavior in the classroom and concert hall.
  • Develop healthy self-esteem in students.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, instruments, materials and facilities
  • Maintains records for such things as student attendance, evaluations, report cards, discipline records and documents required by the School Board and prescribed formats.


  • Communication
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals and teachers.
  • Maintains a collegiate and collaborative relationship with teachers and building staff


  • REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with endorsement in teaching area or approval of the Michigan Department of Education
  • Bachelor"s Degree
  • Demonstrated ability to read music and play an instrument


  • ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to Building Principal
  • Supervises students enrolled in his/her classes as assigned by the building principal, aides, volunteers who have been assigned to his/her instructional area of responsibility.
