    Job Title:
    Paraprofessional II - Special Education - Autism Concentration
    Department: District- Student Services
    Reports To: Building Principal

    SUMMARY Provide support and assistance in meeting the educational needs of students, under the direction and immediate supervision of a licensed school professional. Services provided vary based on Individual Education Plans (IEP) and requirements to provide services in the least restrictive environment. *Paraprofessionals working in the Autism program will be provided additional training to support the needs of students with very specific communication, behavior, social and academic needs.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
    D 45% Support instructional program and provide instructional assistance for students in individual, small and large group settings. Implement approved modifications and/or accommodations of curriculum. Supervise and facilitate students in the classroom and a variety of settings that may include the lunchroom, playground, field trips, extra-curricular activities, on-the-job training.

    D 30% Help and support student with special needs which may include emotional issues, self-help skills, fine and gross motor, visual, auditory, physical, medical and health needs, educational, prevocational and life skills in a least restrictive environment.

    D 15% Collaborate and communicate with other special and regular educators and administrators with regard to academic, behavioral issues and observations. Provide suggestions, feedback and support to building staff, administrators, and outside agencies regarding effective strategies for facilitating learning.

    W 5% Assist the school professional by helping with data collection, updating records and
    documentation while helping maintain student files and class records. Maintain compliance with confidentiality laws including Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA.)

    M 3% Attend and participate in district and building professional development opportunities.

    Ongoing 2% Perform other duties as assigned.

    RESPONSIBILITIES: To work with special needs students; working closely with the SPED Team.

    EDUCATION AND TRAINING High school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, special education paraprofessionals in all schools must have 1 of the 3 following qualifications:
    • 2 years of higher education;
    • or an associate's degree or higher;
    • or a passing score on our state paraprofessional assessment or the Work Keys assessment.
    EXPERIENCE 0 - 2 years experience. Experience working with children with special needs required. Bilingual preferred.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT Skills in positive and effective interventions for students with social, communication and behavior challenges is required. Basic computer skills required such as using email, navigating the internet, and data entry.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS Colorado Driver's license preferred. Active First Aid and CPR certification, as well as Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) instruction are required continuously during employment. Core district Special Education Paraprofessional training or requirements must be acquired within 12 months of hire and are provided by the district.

    SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Acts as a resource for teachers and special service providers.
    JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING Work is assigned by the administrator and licensed school professional. Decision making requires collaboration with administrator, school professional and co-workers. Supervisor is always involved in decision making.

    SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS Medium exposure to self to bruises and cuts due to student behavior. Medium exposure to self to disease due to bodily fluids. Medium exposure to self to hernia due to lifting.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    MENTAL FUNCTIONS While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to compare, analyze, communicate, coordinate, instruct, compute, synthesize, evaluate, use interpersonal skills, compile and negotiate. Occasionally required to make copies.
