This position will serve all K-4 elementary students.

Position only for the 19/20 school year.

Position Title: School Social Worker (Part-Time, 20 hours per week)

Pay Grade: Per Instructional Salary Schedule Period of Employment: 10 Months

Description Approved/ Revised: 4/2019 FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Executive Director of Student Services

General Responsibilities: Integrates training in education and social work, knowledge and skills in curriculum, learning styles, family dynamics and behavior management and applies it to children who are experiencing academic and behavioral difficulties.

Essential Duties:

Completes the sociological component of a full evaluation for referred students, analyzes and interprets the results in a written report as needed.

Conducts home visits to assess student and family needs for referral to appropriate agencies.

Coordinates and collaborates appropriate health, welfare, and other services through community organizations, social agencies, and other public and private resources for students in need.

Develops and implements interventions in the home and/or school to ensure students are safe, healthy, supported, engaged, and actively participating in their school experience.

Develops and implements screening, identification, and referral processes for school staff to utilize with students and families in need.

Provides individual student and family screening, consultation, referral, and case management for students and families requiring multiple services.

Collaborates with Court Services Unit and Family Assessment Services Team.

Conferences with parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, and students, where appropriate, to discuss social-emotional, physical, environmental, or attendance problems interfering with progress in school.

Works with individuals and groups to assist in developing coping strategies, such as conflict mediation, anger management, learning strategies, social skills.

Assists the school in its investigation of student absenteeism and offer consultation to students, families, and staff.

Provides professional development and community/parent seminars on a variety of topics.

Compiles, tracks, and analyzes data relevant to implemented interventions program evaluation.

Serves on system-wide committees, as requested.

Performs other duties as assigned by Executive Director of Student Services.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of clinical and behavioral health wellness and prevention services.

Extensive knowledge of proper techniques and methods of intervention with students and families.

Extensive knowledge of community resources.

Skill in working effectively as a consultant.

Skill in written communication.

Skill in developing and implementing appropriate counseling techniques.

Ability to plan and prioritize work in a timely manner.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to maintain and track appropriate data for program evaluation.

Requisite Education and Experience:

Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Pupil Personnel license with a School Social Worker endorsement.

Must possess a master's degree or higher in Social Work or a related area.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
