Purpose StatementThe Springfield, Missouri Public School District is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Nutrition Specialist in the Nutrition Services Department.

The Springfield School District is Missouri's largest public school district and has built a reputation of academic excellence based on the outstanding performance of our students and schools. About 25,000 students attend 36 elementary schools, an intermediate school, 9 middle schools, 5 high schools and a variety of alternative education and choice programs.

The job of Nutrition Services Substitute Specialist is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the educational process with specific responsibilities for nutrition service activities at an assigned location; preparing and/or serving food items to students, staff and parents according to food safety guidelines; and maintaining nutrition service facilities and equipment in a safe and sanitary condition.

Essential FunctionsSupervises students in the cafeteria during meals for the purpose of ensuring a safe and sanitary environment. Circulates among the tables during the mealtime for the purpose of being available to children who need help or resolve problems that arise.

Informs administration of any serious infraction of discipline rules by students for the purpose of complying with established procedures.

Observe students not eating lunch and call to the attention of school nurse for the purpose of conveying information. • Washes tables when students leave the cafeteria for the purpose of ensuring the cleanliness of tables and surrounding areas.

Assists in establishing, implementing and supervising orderly disposal of food waste, return of trays and dismissal from the cafeteria for the purpose of maintaining sanitary conditions.

Assists with Nutrition Services functions when time allows for the purpose of supporting cafeteria operations and service delivery.

Performs other related duties, as assigned by the Nutrition Services Supervisor, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages and/or ratios; understand written procedures, read and follow instructions; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; quantify food preparation and handling; and sanitation practices.

Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; and operating equipment found in a commercial kitchen.

Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings and/or events; gather, collate and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Employee Punctuality and Appearance

In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated work day, unless the employee has received approved leave.

Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.

Terms of Employment

The terms of employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Missouri public school and Board of Education policy, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by Collective Bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between SPS and that Collective Bargaining representative.

Work Environment & Physical RequirementsThe usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 45% walking and 45% standing. This job is performed in a clean and healthy environment.
