OVERALL GOAL
Provide effective leadership in the development, assessment and improvement of the science instructional program in conjunction with professional learning, resulting in increased student growth.

Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in a variety of coaching and administrative tasks to coordinate, plan, develop and monitor the successful implementation of the District 34 science curriculum. Under the Assistant Superintendent, the District Instructional Coach for Science ensures instruction across the District is aligned with the Illinois teaching standards, interprets changes to the curriculum, and informs teachers and principals of the implications of those changes. The District Instructional Coach for Science works in collaboration with the other Instructional Coaches in evaluating the effectiveness of instructional methods and programs while developing effective job-embedded professional development to ensure teachers and instructional teams implement the science curriculum with fidelity and integrity while focusing on continual improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE SCIENCE INSTRUCTIONAL COACH
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator's License (PEL)At least five years effective teaching experience preferredKnowledge of, and experience with, a broad range of information literacy materials, resources, and practices in K-8 curriculum areasKnowledge of and experience facilitating effective and meaningful professional development experiencesStrong organizational and problem solving skillsAbility to establish and maintain effective organizational relationships and work collaboratively with school and district personnelKnowledge of adult learning characteristics and effective professional development designAbility to coordinate, plan, and implement district and state initiativesEffective verbal and written communication skillsExtensive knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment
RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning with the following:
  1. Inspire and support the creation of an innovative culture, that supports our curricular standards.Model and support science instruction across all buildings and grade-levels.Work cohesively with Intermediate Instructional Science Specialists to maximize the effectiveness of the science curriculum across our 3 - 5 buildings.Design and oversee the development of curriculum to support the implementation of the Illinois state standards for science.Assist teachers in matching appropriate assessment instruments to the science curriculum standards.Analyze student achievement data to identify district needs in order to guide decisions on professional development to improve the teaching and learning process es and increase student achievement.Design, coordinate, facilitate and monitor district and building-level professional development focused on improving instruction of science and increasing overall student achievement.Ongoing Detail Work:
    1. Assist in the selection of appropriate textbooks/resources, instructional materials, and equipment.Create, monitor, and update science curriculum support documents.
    Work in conjunction with other district coaches/departments to facilitate integrated instruction, as appropriate.Provide support to teachers in their classrooms through coaching, modeling, and mentoring.Help instructional coaches and teachers link best practices and materials to science standards.Communicate regularly with principals to provide curriculum updates and/or clarifications to ensure principals are familiar with changes and updates to science curriculum requirements.Meet regularly with instructional coaches to support science curriculum implementation and provide ongoing training.Meet regularly with Instructional Innovation Specialists to support the integration of technology in science programming.Plan and oversee summer curriculum writing/revision as necessary.Coordinate the inventory and purchasing of science resources and equipment.Provide regular district communications to update staff on current trends in science assessment and instructional practices.Engage in vertical articulation of K-12 science curriculum goals and objectives.Participate in district and school level meetings, as appropriate.Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching & Learning and/or the Superintendent.
