    STATUS: Exempt, Temporary (1-yr only)*

    POSITION DESCRIPTION:

    The Middle School Alternative Services Teacher is responsible for working with school administration in identifying, assessing, and implementing effective interventions for grades 6-8, specifically for students who are at greater risk of dropping out due to being expelled, or are at-risk of being expelled, or are at-risk of being declared habitually truant or referred to truancy court. This includes coordinating efforts between district, school, community and local agencies to support students continuing their education. This position is under the guidance of the district office, and reports to the Manager of Student Intervention Services.

    *This is a year to year funded position from that is anticipated to be funded for a minimum of one year and may be extended depending on the availability of continuing funds.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Consultation and Coordination with Parents and Service Providers
    30% weekly The Middle School Alternative Services Teacher holds regular individual meetings with identified students' assigned to caseload. Additionally, Middle School Alternative Services Coordinator regularly consults and coordinates with the service providers, counseling and special education departments at schools, as well as the administration of schools. Ensures that all referrals and consultation to various community agencies (i.e. law enforcement, social services, mental health, probation, PATHs, etc.) happen on an as needed basis and that the parents and families of students on the caseload are also consulted with and informed of the student's progress.

    Instructional Programming
    50% Weekly The Middle School Alternative Services Teacher will be responsible for the following instructional practices:
    • Analyze baseline assessment data for each student in order to differentiate instruction in literacy and math.
    • Research and implement on-line programming
    • Coordinate technology needs of classroom
    • Coordinate with district middle schools in the planning and testing of enrolled students on standardized state assessments
    • Monitor work completion and set up individual learning goals with students
    • Ensure compliance with IEP/504 goals of designated students and coordinate academic programming
    • Research successful alternative programming statewide and implementation of best practice models

    Transition Coordination and Support
    20% Weekly
    • Communicate with middle schools on proper implementation of district discipline policies, including remedial discipline plans and proper interventions used.
    • Determine the appropriateness of alternative programming for students on an individual basis
    • Design contracts outlining program completion and program expectations
    • Create transition plans for students moving back into the mainstream setting
    • Monitor success of students transitioned back into the mainstream setting and communicate with appropriate school personnel on student progress
    • Communicate with district liaisons and courts when necessary regarding truancy and legal issues
    • Coordinate with expulsion hearing officer on proper placement of students
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Colorado teaching license (or obtains one within 3 months of hire) required.
    • Must have a bachelor's degree in a related field.
    • Must have training and/or experience in working with dropout prevention strategies, including RTI process.
    • Experience with and the commitment to work with high risk youth.
    • Must be willing to provide individual and group instruction to the students, and to assist the staff with effective inter-personal strategies to work with students in the classroom.
    • Background and experience in working successfully with dropout prevention/alternative education and truancy interventions, preferably at middle school level.
    • Experience working with student truancy, attendance and behavior issues with students, including students with special needs.
    • Must be able to develop rapport and communicate with students, parents and teachers.
    • Knowledge of culturally responsive pedagogy.
    • Bilingual Spanish skills preferred.

    SALARY: Per the Certified Employee Salary Schedule. To view current Adams 14 salary schedules, please click here. Work year is 208 days that includes additional pay for the 20 additional days beyond the set Teacher Work Year of 188 days. Adams County School District 14 is a direct deposit employer. All new employees must be fingerprinted per H.B. 90-1077 at a cost of $40.00 to the employee.
