ABOUT THE SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT

Stevens Elementary, an Expeditionary Learning School located in the heart of the Wheat Ridge, CO serves a population of 318 students preK-5th grade. We take pride in meeting the academic and social emotional needs of our wonderfully diverse student body. Students are immersed in rich reading experiences grounded in Expeditionary Learning, which leads to hands on experiences in our Stevens Design Labs, on excursions, and in our Wheat Ridge community. Our team creates indoor and outdoor instructional spaces where students can apply their learning. We also believe that technology integration is essential for 21st century success, and as such, we maintain a 1:1 technology ratio for all students K-5. We also host a GT center program and are an inclusive practices school for ASD.

ABOUT THE JOB

7 hours Health Aide Parapro and 1 hour as Office Paraprofessional for a total of 8 hours/day at Stevens Elementary.

RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Maintain the management of the school health room and address the health needs of students per district policy and standards of the Department of Health Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

Administer care and monitor injured or ill students within guidelines of District Clinic Management under the support of the District Area Nurse and as identified in the Health Aide Training and Resource Manual.

Supervise and manage student behavior while student is in the health room.

Administer all medications, within the guidelines of District Policy JLCD, to students and document appropriately as identified in district policy. District Area Nurse will delegate medication administration to Health Aide. Health Aide will follow medication administration protocols and guidelines under the Department of Health Services and will be monitored, documented, and audited by the District Area Nurse.

Maintain accurate and current student immunization records within Infinite Campus and Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS) with the support and guidance of the District Area Nurse. Notify parents via email/letters/phone calls to verify immunization requirements and needs for the student to be compliant with Colorado State Law.

Maintain constant and consistent communication with parents regarding medications, injuries, immunization status, vision and hearing screening of students.

Maintain the Student Health Log of student visitations to the health room. Maintain and distribute the Individualized Student Health Plans as prepared by the District Area Nurse.

Provide ongoing and current updates and alerts regarding student health concerns to the District Area Nurse and school staff.

Organize vision and hearing screening/re-screening for students. Refer students for further testing as needed.

Compile/compose correspondence under the guidance of District Area Nurse which includes sending letters to parents to inform them of required immunizations and assisting with articles for the school newsletter.

Prepare sixth grade student health records for outdoor lab school, including permission forms for medications and organizing the medication and health needs for the students.

Prepare student health records for transitions.

Perform health and personal need duties as directed by teacher or nurse, including bathroom assistance, diapering, feeding and lifting students.

Attend district-provided trainings and professional development as directed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required. Must complete the District's 16 hour training course (New Health Aides) after hire and prior to assuming responsibilities. Jeffco paraprofessional training will be offered upon acceptance of a position and must be completed at first available training opportunity.

EXPERIENCE: Knowledge of basic healthcare and some previous office work preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Interpersonal communication, strong organizational skills, and the ability to multi task as evident by detailed and accurate reporting. Ability to work with students with varied health problems and to demonstrate appropriate judgment of health room management after training. Operating knowledge of and experience with computers and general office equipment. Willingness to learn and assist with delegated duties as necessary.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPR and First Aid certifications highly recommended. Training provided by the district.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no staff supervisory responsibilities.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with students to provide a service, with persons in the same work unit/building and parents to resolve problems or negotiate matters, and with the general public to maintain relationships. Daily/weekly contact with District Area Nurse, administration, secretarial staff and all other staff to communicate and assist with coordination of student health concerns at school site.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: High exposure to disease from bodily fluids due to contact with sick or injured students. Gloves are provided to prevent exposure to bodily fluids.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to analyze, communicate, evaluate and use interpersonal skills; frequently required to coordinate, compute, and compile; occasionally required to copy and instruct.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by the administration, District Area Nurse, and school staff bringing sick/injured students to the health room. This position requires judgment to determine severity and urgency of a child's illness or injury and to take appropriate and timely action. Work is guided by the District Area Nurse, the Student Health Action Plan, district policies, and school procedures and professional judgment. Decision making requires collaboration with District Area Nurse, teachers, staff, school administrators, and parents. Errors in decision making could adversely impact the health and safety of students, staff, and self. Confidentiality is paramount.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross training from the District Area Nurse in healthcare including appropriate medication administration (i.e. nebulizers, glucose meters, EPI pens). Ability to work with students with special medical needs, student behavior management, computers, and office equipment required.
