The Director - College Readiness will be responsible for providing program leadership for school counselors and district college readiness initiatives. Develops and implements school counseling, college readiness programs, and assists school staff in overseeing, coordinating, and evaluating activities that support pK-12 students' preparation for high school graduation, enrollment and graduation from college, and/or gainful employment. Provides professional development centered on developing a college-going culture for district office personnel and school staff; school counselors and school staff; and serves on committees, teams, and boards developing information to improve student achievement and college entry

Essential Functions
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive school counseling and college readiness program that utilizes peer-reviewed and research-based strategies and activities to increase pK-12 college awareness and preparation for postsecondary success.
  • Establishes strong partnerships with local colleges and universities to increase opportunities for early college models in the district and to increase dual enrollment opportunities.
  • Designs and coordinates experiences for middle and high school students that lead to a deeper understanding of the high school choice process, college fit, financial literacy, and career planning.
  • Focuses on and develops programs that increase opportunities for students to enter postsecondary opportunities, including college, career and the military.
  • Directs, develops and reviews system-wide proposals for college and career readiness programs. Creates and shares the vision and goals with district and school leadership, teachers and partners.
  • Designs and implements system-wide financial aid seminars, college fairs, college application seminars and college fairs.
  • Explores and develops grant proposals to support college readiness and college access programs.
  • Functions as an information resource on college locations/college foci, viable careers, and scholarship opportunities, on-line preparation courses for college entrance exams, and college application procedures and timelines.
  • Provides oversight, mentoring, and professional development opportunities for school counselors.
  • Effectively uses web-based reporting tools to monitor key college access data points including the number of students applying to 2- and 4-year colleges; FAFSA completion; college acceptances and college persistence and completion.
  • Supports and assists in the development and implementation of systems that ensure the accuracy of transcripts and student records.
  • Functions as a qualified observer, and supports the development and evaluation of school counselors.
  • Ensures the implementation of state guidelines and goals, as well as national standards, for school counseling.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned by the Executive Director of College and Career Readiness.
  • Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school boards policies and the professional standards.


Maximum Salary 109896.00
Minimum Salary 86426.00
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor?s Degree in education, school counseling, or a related field. Master?s Degree preferred. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution.
  • Valid Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Professional Certificate with endorsement as Principal/Supervisor or Administrator I.
  • Minimum of five years of experience working in the field of primary/secondary education, college awareness /college access, and/or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience working in a school-based and/or college/university setting, urban public school experience recommended.
  • Experience working with Professional School Counselors, college partners, and college access programs.
  • Experience providing instruction in a public school classroom setting recommended, an urban public school classroom setting preferred.
  • Experience with planning, providing and managing professional development.
  • Knowledge of early college and dual credit models.
  • Knowledge of best practices and current models for serving special populations.
  • Experience and knowledge of school scheduling.
  • Broad knowledge of current research, trends, and evaluation tools in school counseling and college access and readiness.
  • Experience in designing and providing professional development, particularly for school counselors.
  • Knowledge of student records best practices and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of data analysis and instructional needs of students, and experience applying this analysis to strategic planning and project implementation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with all community and school stakeholders (CAO, Principals, APs, etc.).
  • High level of proficiency with Technology tools for productivity and data supporting academic and related student, school, and district-level data.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking skills and listening skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills.
  • Cultural competency; appreciation, embracing, and valuing of diversity.
  • Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and independent decision-making skills.
  • Ability to function as a team player and to work collaboratively and cooperatively in a shared-decision-making environment.
  • Ability to function as an independent, self-motivated, and self-reliant self-starter who initiates appropriate actions and strategies and can work successfully without constant direction and close supervision.
  • Ability to function effectively through prioritization of multiple, and sometimes conflicting, demands in order to meet established deadlines.
  • Ability and availability to lead, attend and participate in evening and weekend activities.
  • Ability to travel to and from multiple school sites and other work locations.
  • Ability and availability to attend and participate in local, regional and national conferences.
