SUMMARY
Under general supervision, directs the school athletic activities consistent with district, league and state policies and administrative procedures and to implement within the District an effective and comprehensive co-curricular program for students that support educational enhancements of the students.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coordinate and cooperate with district, school and athletic staff to ensure the athletic program supports and enhances the educational strategies and academic programs of the schools and District.
• Supervise, or provide for the proper supervision, of all student athletic activities, including fund-raising, social activities, performing groups' events, athletic contests and regional or state level competition.
• Work with students and staff to see that proper planning has been conducted which will ensure reasonable expectations of success for scheduled events.
• Supervise, manage and evaluate the school athletic program.
• Ensure eligibility of athletes.
• Coordinate supervision of all home athletic contests.
• Oversee and ensure proper eligibility status of coaches.
• Assist coaches in assessing their individual programs in relation to program objectives.
• Work with coaching staff in developing goals for program improvement in keeping with District philosophy, goals and guidelines.
• Provide leadership to coaching staff in annually identifying program strengths and weaknesses.
• Involve students and parents (as appropriate) in athletic development and evaluation.
• Schedule all athletic programs both home and away.
• Arrange all transportation for the athletic program.
• Manage the funds allocated to the school's athletic programs in accordance with district guidelines, processes and procedures, and school activities.
• Manage the requisitioning, storing, issuing and inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Ensure that budget allocations for programs are tied to coaching objectives and are consistent with established department and district priorities.
• Communicate with the public about the athletic program in the school and establish positive community rapport; encourage community participation through attendance at athletic events.
• Coordinate with Communications Department staff the usage of the news media effectively to ensure coverage of athletic programs.
• Relate information regarding athletic programs to the Principal, District staff, and School Board.
• Assist in the selection, placement and evaluation of coaching staff assigned to the school.
• Assist in the management, maintenance and use of indoor and outdoor facilities to expedite all activities and functions of the school athletic program, as well as benefit the community.
• Ensure safety standards are complied with in all facilities.
• Support the relationship between MPS and the community by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent's goals and priorities in compliance with all strategies, programs, policies and procedures.
• Maintain absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information; performs related.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines
Bachelor's degree in Athletic or Recreational Administration, Sports Management or related field, AND two (2) years of experience as a coach or athletic director in an educational/recreational environment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources. Minnesota Teaching license is preferred.

Knowledge of:
• Federal, state and local laws, ordinances, policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of athletics programs and recreational facilities in an educational environment.
• Rules and regulations of the Minnesota State High School League and other governing agencies.
• Training and coaching techniques for individual sports.
• Purpose, use and benefits of athletics and recreation programs and activities.
• Legal liabilities and responsibilities for athletic program staff.
• Principles and practices of public sector administrative management, including policies, regulations, processes, procedures, records management, finance, budgeting, purchasing, contract management, customer service and employee supervision.

Skill in:
• Interpreting and applying educational and athletic policies and standards, including the promotion of academic enhancement through athletics.
• Managing and coordinating sports and athletic support programs.
• Promoting a positive educational, sports and recreation environment and good personal behavior.
• Teaching effective sports skills classes and providing individual instruction.
• Promoting and enforcing safety standards and practices.
• Using courtesy and respect in interactions with students, athletes and parents.
• Using initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
• Identifying problems and opportunities, and developing solutions.
• Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
• Managing staff, delegating tasks and authority, and coaching to improve staff performance.
• Providing effective customer service, and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
• Collaborating as a team member, with colleagues, staff and community representatives.
• Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers, parents, MPS staff, booster clubs and community organizations.
• Effective verbal and written communication.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid Minnesota State Driver's License required.
Specific technical training and certification may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
