Assistant Director of History and Social Studies

The Assistant Director of History and Social Studies requires expertise in the teaching of history and social studies and will assist the Director of History and Social Studies, K-12 in creating and disseminating tools that enable the implementation of the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for History and the Social Science, aligned curriculum, assessment, and instructional practices. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing expert support for all curriculum, assessment, and implementation for History and Social Studies for all schools Pre-K to 12.

  1. SCOPE
The Office of Academics is responsible for determining priorities regarding all core curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development district-wide. The Assistant Director will develop a deep understanding of instructional practices, academic content, curriculum and instruction resources, capacity-building tools aligned with the academic priorities, and professional development needs of schools working in support of schools across the district. As a member of Academics, the Assistant Director of History and Social Studies' work will be focused on building the capacity of schools, networks, and the district to support and monitor the use of curricular resources, research-based practices, and assessments.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Support teachers in the effective implementation of research-based instructional practices to improve student outcomes
  • Develop and provide professional development for teams to support the improvement of core instruction and the implementation of the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for History and Social Science
  • Create professional development modules, tools, and resources that support the consistent implementation of aligned curricular materials, instructional practices and assessments that maintain the integrity of core content and the expectations of the 2018 Frameworks.
  • Develop processes and practices for monitoring of implementation of the instructional tools and accompanying professional development.
  • Participate and as needed lead instructional learning walks to gauge and monitor instruction.
  • Provide school level support as needed in the form of professional development, leading common planning time (CPT), and one-on-one support
  • Develop, communicate, and maintain regular feedback on the progress of the modules, tools, and resources with other Academic areas.
  • Regularly revise and review PD modules, tools, and resources to respond to changing student needs and improve effective and efficient practice.
  • The creation of tools and PD modules that guide school and teacher leaders to improve instruction/lessons and scaffolding to address the needs of all learners; supporting high quality, consistent delivery of content and instruction, ensuring grade level expectations for all students, district-wide.
  • The creation and adaptation of protocols and processes to enable school-based Instructional Leadership Teams to improve the regular, effective school-wide implementation of the Framework, aligned curricular materials, practices and assessments to impact the achievement of their students.
  • Participate in regular classroom observations/visits focused on effective instructional practices in the content area.
  • Regular evaluation of instruction to ensure effectiveness and relevancy.
  • Participation in a regular data and feedback on the progress of PD and supports.
  • Creation of curricular resources and tools to support full alignment to the Framework and monitors the implementation of those resources.
  • The revision, creation, and input into ongoing assessments including progress monitoring, formative and summative assessments and curriculum embedded performance tasks.
  • Participation in a regular data and feedback on the effectiveness of existing curricular resources, implementation tools, PD modules and assessments.
  • Regular revision of curricular resources, implementation tools, PD modules, and aligned assessments.
  • Document input, individually and from the field, on assessments to research, assessment and evaluation.

Master's Degree in Education.
3-5 years urban teaching experience in content area and grade level.
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification in content area in appropriate grade level
  • Massachusetts Supervisor license
  • Massachusetts History license
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators and families.
  • Must believe that all students can reach proficiency, in inclusion models for Special Education, and in maintaining high standards for all of our students.
  • Ability to establish a culturally sensitive atmosphere, which enhances individual growth, promotes a positive self-image and ensures equity for all members of the school community.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines achieving goals successfully as required
  • Required to work 225 days/year
  • Must have excellent analytical skills as well as oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to retrieve and analyze large quantities of data from multiple resources.
  • Detailed orientated, effective organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently individually and in a team oriented, fast paced environment both within the department and across departments.
