Title: Director of Instruction, K-8 School

Reports to: Principal

Terms: BASAS, Group 10B, 211 days

The Director of Instruction will direct, support, coordinate and supervise all aspects of curriculum and instruction in the school to meet system wide goals and to improve student achievement. He/she will use and help to implement high impact practices to set the bar for academic excellence in the school. He/she will assist with the supervision of teachers, including regularly and systematically observing instruction and advising teachers on instructional methods, reviewing teachers' student learning and professional practice goals and action plans; advises the principal on the diagnosis of teaching performance, including the preparation of prescriptions for the improvement of performance, and coordinating and monitoring professional development of teachers. He/she will also serve as a coach to teachers to help develop teaching practice. The Director of Instruction will also coordinate implementation of State- and Citywide Learning Standards as well as system-wide programs, goals, and objectives dealing with curriculum and instruction.

Reports to: Principal
Responsibilities:
  1. Coordinates curriculum among subject areas and within and among grade levels and programs including Title I, special education, English language learners.
  2. Assists in the administration of promotional standards and in the planning of intervention of students who failed to meet these standards.
  3. Establishes and maintains a Curriculum Center to provide teachers with instructional materials to meet curriculum objectives.
  4. Coordinates and evaluates the purchase and selection of texts and materials and maintains inventory.
  5. Coordinates administration of assessments (i.e. MCAS, MEPA, A-Net, etc.) and assists the Principal and teachers with the analysis of test results and with the use of test results to modify instruction.
  6. Facilitates the Instructional Leadership Team and regularly provides feedback on progress toward whole school instructional and performance goals.
  7. Facilitates acquisition of external resources for curriculum and coordinates the development and implementation of alternative programs.
  8. Communicates with Principal regarding supervision of substitute teachers.
  9. Serve as primary evaluator and instructional coach to content teachers in grades 1-8 in conjunction with principal
  10. Coordinate curriculum mapping and vertical alignment and support through professional development with instructional rounds and peer observations for teachers K-8
  11. Assists the Principal in the planning of school-wide activities including professional development.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal including supporting the Principal to help maintain student discipline, manage the business aspects of the school in order to assist the Principal in creating an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning.

Qualifications Required:
  • Master's Degree
  • Three (5) years teaching experience
  • Massachusetts license, Principal/Assistant Principal (PreK-6) or Supervisor/Director license
  • SEI Endorsement
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
Preferred:
  • Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (C.A.G.S.)
  • Fluent or proficient in Spanish (reading and writing)
  • ESL license
  • Serve as a contributing member of the administrative team and serve on assigned committees.
  • Encourage innovative programs that may improve instruction
  • Coordinate, supervise and evaluate the selection and use of textbooks and other instructional materials.
  • Coordinate district assessment and effectiveness of the educational programs.
  • Supervise the administration and analysis of all state and local testing programs within the district, including the creation of an annual school-wide assessment calendar
  • Conduct formal and informal observations and supervision of staff.
  • Leads, aligns, and coordinates instructional programming including curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development
  • Align grading and assessment practices that support learning for all students
  • Prepare and create the School Instructional Calendar.
TERMS: BASAS 10B, 211 days per year
