SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Department of English Learners, in collaboration with school principal(s), the Literacy Specialist supports Washoe County School District (WCSD) Strategic Plan goals, objectives, and initiatives by building capacity with their colleagues through technical assistance to teachers in regards to understanding the Nevada State Literacy Plan, Nevada K.I.D.S. Read (NVKR) requirements, implementing WCSD's Literacy Plan, and implementing teaching and learning strategies to meet Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) interventions and assessments in the area of K-3 literacy. Other areas of assistance include pedagogical skill, educational research, lesson design and modeling, engagement in the instructional coaching cycle, and completion of required paperwork, in alignment with the requirements of Nevada K.I.D.S. Read. Incumbent performs related work as required.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provides leadership and support in Professional Learning Communities (PLC) and in the delivery of professional learning to the site; works primarily with whole staff professional learning, grade level professional learning communities (PLCs) and with individual teachers to the extent possible; collaborates with the NVKR Literacy Specialist Professional Learning Community, school and district leaders and the NVKR Coordinator in the support of the site's School Performance Plan, WCSD's Literacy Plan, and the NVKR initiative directed at improving instruction; and uses data-driven review and related discussion to drive improvement efforts.
• Is an active contributor, and provides leadership, and support to the school site leadership team.
• Has knowledge and assists in the development and implementation of the School Performance Plan (SPP) with regards to aligning the SPP with the District's Literacy Plan.
• Serves as a resource and support to K-4 teachers through grade level PLCs, teaching, modeling, and supporting collaborative structures and the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycle; provide professional resources; serve as a conduit of content and instructional expertise as well as on-site technical assistance and professional learning with core and intervention materials as well as other NVKR requirements; may model lessons as well as observe and offer feedback to teachers; support the implementation of effective research-based teaching strategies in regards to NCACS andNVKR.
• Models continuous learning and reflection and helps colleagues work collaboratively to solve problems, challenges, and conflicts related to shifts in practice.
• The Literacy Specialist will continue to deepen their instructional practices through participating in professional learning related to NVACS and NVKR requirements and by attending other meetings required for Literacy Specialists.
• The Literacy Specialist will work in these settings as well as others to foster relationships/partnerships to further collaboration. Additionally, they will take the information learned in the trainings and work to implement them into their instructional setting.
• The Literacy Specialist will perform other duties as assigned by the EL Department and principal, which fit within the overall objective of the position.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

1. Education: Bachelors or higher degree.

-AND-

2. Experience: A minimum of three years successful classroom teaching experience, with at least one year's experience in WCSD and an Effective rating reflected on their evaluations.

-AND-

3. Teacher Leadership Pool acceptance required. If there are no qualified candidates in the Teacher Leadership Pool who meet the job specific qualifications, a candidate can be hired with a provision that they qualify into the Teacher Leadership Pool within the first year.

Knowledge of: Washoe County School District Strategic Plan; Nevada content and Common Core State Standards; adopted core curriculum materials; and research-based instructional strategies. Nevada State Literacy Plan, Nevada K.I.D.S. Read requirements, implementing Washoe County School District's Literacy Plan, and implementing teaching and learning strategies to meet Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS), interventions and assessments in the area of K-3 literacy.

Skill at: Group facilitation and interpersonal communication both oral and written; teaching adults, including effective collaboration; and organizational skills and the ability to design and implement effective professional learning experiences.

Licenses/Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid State of Nevada driver license with a driving record acceptable to the District; possession of a valid Nevada teaching certificate.

Special Considerations: Experience in dual immersion and/or bilingual Spanish skills are desirable but not required.

Additional Job Information:
This is a Limited Term position ending June 2020. This position is grant-funded through the ZOOM grant and is contingent upon continued funding. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the grant without re-advertising.
At the conclusion of this position, the incumbent will be eligible to participate in the exclusive transfer process and overage process in accordance with the certified negotiated agreement.

The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

Please be advised there is a 90-day waiting period for insurance benefits. Benefits are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.
