JOB TITLE: English as a Second Language Tutor
QUALIFICATIONS:
College degree preferred
REPORTS TO: Principal and works under direct supervision of ESL certified classroom teacher at assigned school.
JOB SUMMARY: The basic function of this position is to assist in providing a well-organized and smooth functioning classroom environment in which EL students can take full advantage of the ESL language acquisition instructional program and available resource materials. The Title III Tutor will assist the ESL certified classroom teacher with prepared lessons, classroom management, supply/materials preparation and with monitoring students to facilitate additional instruction. Along with the ESL certified classroom teacher, the Title III Tutor will assist with pull-out sessions and inclusion sessions for support to ELs according to a schedule determined by the ESL certified teacher and the school principal.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Works cooperatively with the ESL certified classroom teacher in the instructional planning process.
• Assists, as directed, pull-out sessions for language acquisition and assists regular certified classroom teachers through the inclusion process to support ELs in the mainstream classroom.
• Contributes to the development and implementation of a successful ESL language acquisition instructional program.
• Assists students by interpreting and assisting them in understanding directions.
• Assists students with drill or additional language and core content instruction.
• Assists/monitors students in small group sessions.
• Assists students with make-up work, as needed and as time permits.
• Reads to students as directed by the certified classroom teacher for extended learning opportunities.
• Monitors students and assists with classroom management.
• Supervises independent student study with language skills and content area subjects.
• Helps maintain an attractive and clean learning environment.
• Assists the ESL certified classroom teacher with room arrangements such as learning centers or furniture placement.
• Works harmoniously with administration, staff, students and parents.
• Operates within the school district's policies and procedures.
• Assists with student supervision on field trips.
• Assists, as directed, in performing all clerical responsibilities handled or assigned by the ESL certified classroom teacher.
• Follows the district's policy on overtime, reporting to work and the requirements of the Wage and Hour Act.
• Follows the district's fixed asset policy.
• Attends and actively participates in required professional development programs.
• Performs other duties as requested or assigned by the ESL certified teacher and school principal.
