Department Description:

The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Supervisor and will be responsible for developing and monitoring of implementation of the special education instructional program.

Brief Description:

This is an ASASP Unit II Table F Grade 2 Position

Salary Range: $94,645 - $134,943

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Provides direct support to all 9-12 classroom teachers in special education instruction best practices, classroom materials, and classroom management for all students with disabilities;
  • Assists in the development and delivery of systemic, area, and school-level workshops on all 9-12 curricular issues, differentiation, teaching strategies, IEP development, modifications and accommodations and behavior management in collaboration with the Departments of Talent Development and Curriculum and Instruction;
  • Reviews Individualized Education Plans and records of students to assist the I.E.P. teams and school personnel in determining the most appropriate least restrictive environment to implement instructional programs and to provide guidance to school teams on implementing the IEP;
  • Assists with training as it relates to IEP development and the delivery of instruction;
  • Assists teachers directly with aligning classroom strategies, the county curriculum, Common Core State Standards, Universal Design for Learning and functional life skills, as appropriate;
  • Assists teachers directly with accommodations and modifications for special education students taking state and district assessments for secondary students;
  • Works with school administrators, specialists and school staff in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the instructional program in the assigned area;
  • Assists school teams with staffing for special education programs;
  • Keeps abreast of latest research, best practices, developments and techniques in the delivery of special education instruction;
  • Supports school leadership with general supervision strategies; and
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Job Requirements:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Thorough knowledge of current educational principles, best practices and procedures in special education, staff training, instruction, and assessing program needs in the assigned instructional specialty area;
  • Thorough knowledge of Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) organization and administration of 9-12 curriculum, programs of studies, policies, testing practices, and federal and state laws related to instructional responsibility;
  • Knowledge of state and local standards, assessments and the ability to apply them to curriculum and classroom instruction;
  • Knowledge of national standards, curriculum development, student program accountability;
  • Excellent program planning and organizational skills; and
  • Excellent communication, technology and human relations skills.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Master's degree from an accredited institution in general and/or special education; Five years of successful teaching experience in special education with math and reading courses or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in this position.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Certification in Special Education or dual certification in General or Special Education, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; Advanced Professional Certificate with Administrative I or working toward such certification in specified period of time.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
