Job Summary
Provides support to the Superintendent, the Board of Education, administrators, principals and school-based staff through media relations including: press event logistics, writing media advisories and press releases, responding to media inquiries and advancing positive relationships with the press. Helps organize the media relations department and provides assistance in the overall media strategy for the School District.
Essential Functions
  • Plans, writes, prepares and/or reviews press releases for the School District and disseminates this information publicly; assists in posting this information on the District website.
  • Researches, interviews, writes, edits, proofreads and distributes news and information focusing on District success and addressing how the District will overcome challenges.
  • Helps to develop story logs, pitches stories to the media and manages editorial calendars and conducts research.
  • Maintains repository of press releases and articles.
  • Ensures timely and consistent dissemination of material.
  • Participates in the set-up and preparation of all District sponsored media and public relations events.
  • Assists in maintaining information on the School District's home page and the Office of Communications and External Relations page.
  • Assists District staff in the assessment of strategies launched to improve communication; recommends actions that will enhance both real and perceived value of efforts.
  • Participates in the planning and advertisement of press events when the District collaborates with governmental bodies, non-profits, businesses, educational institutions and other organizations.
  • Responds to a variety of external parties to provide information and facilitate communication among parties.
  • Assists the Senior Communications Officer and the Deputy Chief of Communications with large-scale and complex assignments.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three years of full-time, paid, professional experience in communications, journalism, public affairs or a related field which has included the design and development of printed and on-line publications.
  • Preference for bilingual candidates fluent in Spanish who know how to operate audio-visual equipment.
  • All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • English usage, spelling punctuation and grammar.
  • Public relations methods and techniques.
  • Desktop publishing and web development techniques.
  • Social media, including but not limited to, Facebook© and Twitter.
  • Layout, design and printing processes.
  • Video and audio production techniques and strategies.
  • Cable systems technology.
  • Digital graphics and web design.
  • Photographic techniques.
  • The principles and practices of journalism.
  • The technical tools and software including Flash, Photoshop, Acrobat, Microsoft Office, non-linear editing software and other appropriate software applications.
  • Project management and cost analysis/monitoring.

Demonstrated ability to :
  • Use computer applications, which include Microsoft Office.
  • Think creatively.
  • Handle multiple projects.
  • Read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Solve practical problems.
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups.
  • Ensure that publications are appropriate for the subject audience.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Additional Job Information: This is a 12-month, non-represented position. The salary grade for this role is 4023. Interviews may be conducted to determine how well a candidate meets the established criteria. Please note that not all qualified candidates may be selected for an interview.
