Job Summary
Meaningfully engaging with key stakeholders, building broad-based networks of support, and effectively communicating accomplishments and priorities are essential to the implementation of Action Plan 3.0 and improving the overall performance of The School District of Philadelphia. The Office of Communications and External Relations has the mission critical task of ensuring that key stakeholders, are interested in, and support the District's mission, vision, and priorities.
Reporting to the Chief of Communications and External Relations, the Director of Internal Communications is a vital part of the Communications Team and the School District of Philadelphia's efforts to continually strengthen organizational culture and engagement. The Director will be responsible for designing, implementing and sustaining a comprehensive internal communications strategy. The Director will be part of a team that develops and executes strategic initiatives including: Championing an " Employees First " communications model for all major SDP news, and promoting a culture of communications excellence in every school and department.
Essential Functions
  • Assists in the development and drive implementation of an employee pride campaign, expands and deepens SDP employee engagement and builds opportunities for information sharing and collaboration.
  • Works with SDP central offices and schools to provide employee communication and toolkit support for all major initiatives.
  • Leads all employee recognition and appreciation programs.
  • Develops a strategy championing an " Employees First" communications model for all major SDP news.
  • Creates a bi weekly or monthly platform to support superintendent-to-staff engagement.
  • Develops and oversees content development for an internal employee portal and/or e-newsletter.
  • Leads a Communications Council and other efforts to support a continuous pipeline of positive story ideas.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Five years of full-time, paid, professional experience in internal communications, preferably in a large K-12 school district or organization.
  • All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • journalistic principles, practices and trends.
  • internal communications methods and techniques.
  • application to use various media formats.
  • English usage, including spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • internal communications software, research methods and techniques.
  • videography and photography skills preferred.
  • developing numerous internal communications tools including e-newsletters and surveys.

Demonstrated ability to :
  • analyze data and exercise sound judgment in collecting and evaluating information to inform decision making.
  • research, write and edit a variety of internal communications materials
  • evaluate a variety of subject matter critically from the standpoint of reader interest, content, style and organization of material.
  • make sound decisions and recommendations for action..
  • coordinate and manage multiple projects through to completion and to meet tight deadlines.
  • learn and interpret various School District policies and procedures.
  • be a proactive problem solver.
  • use a personal computer.
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Additional Job Information: This is a 12-month, non-represented position. The salary grade for this role is 4028. Interviews may be conducted to determine how well a candidate meets the established criteria. Please note that not all qualified candidates may be selected for an interview.
