Department Description:

Under the direction of the Principal, the Wing Coordinator - Regional will coordinate the instructional program for students with significant cognitive and multiple disabilities, including all educational services as they relate to the medical, emotional, social, behavioral and academic needs. The Coordinator is responsible to communicate with parents and families, various PGCPS offices, outside agencies as well as staff from other programs.

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Providing instructional leadership for the alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment for students with significant cognitive and multiple disabilities;
  • Identifying, assessing and supporting the instructional needs, learning styles and appropriate teaching strategies for use with students identified with significant cognitive and multiple disabilities;
  • Assisting classroom teachers and related services personnel in developing and implementing an appropriate Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student;
  • Obtaining and utilizing new and existing resources/materials available for use in adapting and modifying curriculum, including current trends in technology for education and assistive technology for access and communication; behavior management programming and strategies; teacher-oriented educational assessment tools and techniques; learning strategies and instructional best practices for students with significant cognitive and multiple disabilities;
  • Coordinating effective communication within the building with school administrators, families, IEP Team, various offices within the district, outside agencies, and/or personnel from other programs;
  • Facilitating inclusive opportunities to meet the needs of students;
  • Facilitating the completion of educational assessments and reporting as needed;
  • Providing in-service opportunities for special education and general education staff members regarding educational programing for students with significant cognitive and multiple disabilities;
  • Facilitating for ongoing parental involvement and participation in the program;
  • Assisting school administration in observing and supervising instructional practices of special educators through the evaluation process;
  • Assisting school administration in observing and supervising classroom staff, including para-professionals, instructional special education assistants (ISEA), and dedicated assistants (DA);
  • Assisting school administration in interviewing prospective teachers, paraprofessionals, ISEAs and DAs;
  • Assisting school administration in scheduling of staff and students for the regional programs
  • Act as a full member of the administrative staff with all administrative rights and responsibilities associated within the school building as assigned.
  • Applying and monitoring current federal and State legislation and regulation, including local policy and procedures as they relate to special education; and
  • Performs other duties ass assigned.


  • Job Requirements:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Broad knowledge of special education instructional and diagnostic techniques, management skills and strategies for modifying curriculum; Knowledge and experience in working with students with significant cognitive and multiple disabilities;
  • Knowledge of special education instructional and diagnostic techniques, management skills and strategies for adapting and modifying curriculum aligned to Maryland College and Career Ready Standards for students with significant cognitive disabilities;
  • Knowledge of secondary programming for students with significant cognitive disabilities transitioning to post-secondary options;
  • Experience in providing professional development to school teams related to educational programming for students with significant cognitive disabilities;
  • Experience in developing and reviewing Individualized Education Plans, including program modifications, supports and transition planning for students with significant cognitive disabilities;
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning process;
  • Ability to provide instruction and leadership skills that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education;
  • Knowledge and experience with and use of technology and assistive technology;
  • Effective program planning and organizational skills;
  • Knowledge of federal and state legislation and regulation, including local policy and procedures in special education;
  • Ability to create a team that works collaboratively and promotes high expectations for all students;
  • Thorough knowledge of Prince George's County Public Schools organization and administration; administration of program of studies, policies, testing practices; and federal and state laws to instructional responsibilities;
  • Knowledge of state and local standards, alternate state assessments, national standards, curriculum development, and student program accountability;
  • Effective program planning and organizational skills; and excellent oral and written communication skills; and
  • Demonstrated skill in effective human relations and in oral and written communication.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Master's degree required. Five (5) years of successful teaching experience in special education with a strong special education instruction and compliance background; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in this position.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Advanced Professional Certificate in Special Education; and Admin I certification

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
