Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third largest school district in the United States, serving over 360,000 students in more than 600 schools and employing nearly 36,000 people, most of them teachers. CPS has set ambitious goals to ensure that every student, in every school and every neighborhood, has access to a world-class learning experience that prepares each for success in college, career and civic life. In order to fulfill this mission, we make three commitments to our students, their families and all Chicagoans: academic progress, financial stability and integrity. Six core values are embedded within these commitments - student centered, whole child, equity, academic excellence, community partnership and continuous learning.

The OIG is charged with the responsibility of investigating allegations of waste, fraud and financial mismanagement in public education within the jurisdiction of the Chicago Board of Education.

The OIG is seeking to hire a staff attorney to provide legal writing support to the OIG during the investigatory process. Under the direction of the Inspector General and other supervisory personnel, the staff attorney will review and analyze case files and draft investigative summaries and other legal documents for the OIG.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated ability to write thorough analytical reports conveying complex issues in a clear and concise manner

  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills, including ability to quickly digest large amounts of information and provide high-level factual and legal analysis

  • Extremely effective communication and collaboration skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team

  • Ability to identify and escalate critical issues to supervisors and provide analyses as appropriate

  • Refined judgment with the ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines and work independently while maintaining high levels of organization

Minimum Qualifications:

  • JD from an ABA accredited law school

  • Admission to the Illinois Bar

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional editing and/or law clerk experience
