    TITLE: LEVEL 1 BUILDING ENGINEER (BofE)

    SALARY RANGE: $20.29 per hour

    GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES :
    Performs custodial related tasks including grounds maintenance, provides supervision of custodial staff, general maintenance, building security and safety. Performs other work, such as moving furniture, receiving and sorting supplies, distributing mail, snow and ice removal, etc. necessary to operating a school. Minor maintenance of HVAC equipment, i.e. replacing filters, checking chemical feed systems, and troubleshooting complaint calls.
    EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

    Maintain ledger information on assigned accounts.
    Check ledger amounts for accuracy, correcting inaccuracies.
    Reconcile account statements and balances.
    Log documents in and out as they flow through processing cycles.
    Receive, prepare, and fill-out documents and data entry forms for computer processing.
    Validate computer entries and printouts against input forms and submit instructions for
    correcting errors or making adjustments.
    Verify accuracy of financial documents, including vouchers and requisitions.
    Check reports, forms, and payments for accuracy, completeness, timeliness and
    conformance to legal and policy requirements.
    Check legality of expenditures and availability of funds.
    Verify accuracy of payroll entries.
    Prepare, type, word process and proofread a variety of documents, including general
    correspondence and reports.
    Respond to questions from other employees and assist those contacted in the course of
    duty.
    Perform complicated payroll calculations involving standard hours, overtime, sick time,
    other leave time.
    Calculate, understand and process all aspects of payroll.
    Perform standard bookkeeping, accounting and auditing duties.
    Complete required forms and statements.
    May assume duties of absent employee.
    Perform related duties as required or as needed.

    KNOWLEDGE OF:
    basic arithmetic and english.
    basic computer skills, ms office functions and group wise.
    basic types of heating systems.
    basics of supervision.
    basic types of heating and air conditioning systems.
    building crafts skills sufficient to perform minor or routine and emergency repair work.
    general knowledge to disconnect/disable building systems, i.e, gas, water, electric.
    basic knowledge of emergency safety systems.
    custodial (including grounds maintenance) procedures, supplies, tools and equipment.
    department/board rules, regulations, benefits, forms, etc.

    ABILITY TO :
    Keep simple records and prepare simple reports.
    Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
    Ability to execute emails, create word documents, reports, and spread sheets.
    Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    Perform chemical analysis and treatment of water to maintain prescribed standards in heating and cooling systems, if required.
    Recognize health, safety and security problems, and to respond appropriately.
    Keep abreast of new technology.
    Work under stressful situations/conditions; make decisions, especially in critical situations.
    Work independently in absence of supervision.
    Perform preventive maintenance to custodial equipment and as directed to HVAC equipment.
    Provide instructions/demonstrations/training in work to be performed.
    Establish schedules, priorities; delegate work; appraise work of others.
    Work overtime, weekends and other than normal day shift.
    Seek continuing education/training in order to advance knowledge and skill in the field and in job performance.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Minimum of three (3) years of satisfactory work experience in building operations or commercial custodial work.
    Must have satisfactorily completed and have a passing grade (70 (C) or higher) in the Stationary Engineering 1 and 2.
    Must have satisfactorily completed and have a passing grade (70 or higher) in the HVACR-1 course.
    Must have satisfactorily completed and have a Universal CFC Certification.
    After becoming a Building Engineer one must complete the following course work: Homeland Security and Basic Computer training.

    MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION
    Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.

    Other Requirements:
    Free of criminal convictions, especially in crimes involving non-adults, controlled substances, intoxication, pornography and burglary/robbery.
    Physical strength and stamina to lift/carry/move heavy objects weighing as much as 80 pounds, and occasionally much heavier.
    Willing and able to work at heights on ladders and scaffolding, as much as 30 feet.
    Willing and able to work in cramped, dirty, dusty and isolated areas.
    Body structure does not prevent access to work areas, such as narrow crawl spaces.
    This is a sensitive classification, therefore applicants for appointment must pass security clearance, which includes a check of employment references and criminal records.

    PROBATIONARY PERIOD :
    Six (6) months.

    SUBJECTS AND WEIGHTS OF TEST SECTIONS:
    The selection process is worth 100% of the exam grade and consists of a written exam. The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Secretary. Determination of the passing score will be based on the job analysis, analysis of examination results, consultation with subject matter experts or other professional methods. Veteran's points will be added to passing scores.
