HCZ is seeking a College Counselor. The College Counselor develops and administers a comprehensive program that promotes and enhances academic, personal, social, and career development for students in their respective grade levels. They help students evaluate their abilities, interests, and talents to develop academic and career goals. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for the mission of HCZ, an understanding and respect for the culture of all residents of Harlem, and experience working in a school setting that fosters a love for children.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate the college application process with high school seniors
  • Identify potential scholarship/fellowship opportunities for the students
  • Write recommendations when appropriate
  • Conduct weekly advisory seminars with high school students and information sessions with parents
  • Arrange college tours both in-state and out-of-state
  • Facilitate the financial aid process and assist seniors with completing FAFSA, TAP, and all other related documents
  • Support students in learning their strengths and building academic and personal skills
  • Oversee SAT preparation classes for seniors
  • Develop relationships with admission counselors at colleges and universities
  • Motivate youth to strive for academic and social success
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualification, Skill and Knowledge Requirements
  • Master's degree in school counseling or related field
  • 3+ years' experience as a College Counselor
  • A passion for the mission of the Harlem Children's Zone
  • Must have strong organizational and communication skills, verbal and written
  • Ability to work with parents, students, faculty, support staff, external government representatives, as well as school community groups
  • Understanding of different student maturity levels
  • Ability to help students gain awareness of their interests and abilities and to help them manage their behavior and thinking processes
  • Understanding of test construction and ability to interpret educational test data
  • Knowledge of grade test targets
  • Ability to evaluate a student transcript
  • Ability to plan, organize, and implement meetings involving a variety of topics and personnel
