Purpose of Job: The TSS Social Worker provides an advanced level of clinical knowledge and leadership within the Trauma Sensitive Schools Initiative and interdisciplinary team within the Office of Student Interventions and school-based staff. Provides strengths-based, evidenced-based services in a trauma sensitive manner to support the overall (personal, emotional, and social) well-being of students and families. Serves as an advocate for identified students and families, responding in a culturally responsive, strength-based manner to meet their socio-emotional needs. Promotes resilience-based programming related to creating a trauma-sensitive culture within school environment, while educating school personnel, families, and community partners on best practices to support the overall wellness of students and families. Maintains a high level of clinical experience and knowledge, while providing brief individual mental health consultation, mental health assessments/screenings, and crisis management services to designated students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Provide supportive, trauma-informed clinical consultation to school staff to support socio-emotional needs of students.

Effectively collaborate with school staff, families, and community partners to support the overall well-being of the students.

Provide classroom support to teachers, consulting on trauma sensitive strategies and interventions that promote student success and empowerment.

Promote the core principles of trauma-informed care, ensuring that all service provided for students and families foster resilience.

Deliver quality culturally-responsive professional development on trauma sensitive practices as relate to mental health wellness of students and families.

Identify areas for self-improvement, pursue necessary education/training resources, stay abreast of current research, and share knowledge with others.

Assist in the development of TSS materials and curriculum

Provides service in a manner that is trauma informed and appropriate for the client's age; demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to meet the client's physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs.

Provide referrals to all social service agencies for students and families as needed; staying informed of available trauma-informed community resources and contacts – such as:

Housing & Food assistance

Mental Health supports (trauma informed providers as well as providers trained in Trauma specific therapeutic modalities

Crisis Supports

Health Insurance

Actively participate as a member of the school Problem-Solving Teams, coordinating care as needed.

Present / Arrange for staff professional development regarding TSS, suicide prevention, risk screenings, substance prevention, bullying and other behavioral health related topics as needed to support the staff and students.

Provide brief crisis intervention, risk assessment, short-term stabilization services, safety planning

Provide Trauma-Informed treatment/support provided based upon sound theoretical principles, with knowledge of the special issues and needs of the population served.

Provide strengths-based, culturally-responsive clinical interventions, conflict resolution and short-term case-management services to students and their families.

Provide person-centered services / treatment involving all support systems identified by student to increase family participation and understanding to promote safety and trustworthiness.

Maintain accurate documentation and records as required by KCPS and State.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree or above in counseling, psychology, social work, family therapy or closely related field.

Minimum of 3 years' experience in working with youth and families with a high prevalence of trauma

Must demonstrate knowledge of the theory and practice of mental health assessment / treatment and have basic research skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, as is the ability to function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.

Previous experience in working within a school system and local, state social service systems

Strong written and oral communications skills

Strong organizational and leadership skills

Must be able to demonstrate good independent judgment, adapt to new duties and work in a changing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Missouri Licensed as Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)

Knowledge and experience of providing trauma-sensitive services, and an understanding of how trauma impacts the students and other systems.

Multi-cultural and bi-lingual (Spanish or Somali), based on student and family population – practice cultural humility.

Knowledge of psychiatric terminology and the process of psychiatric diagnosis and latest research related to treating individuals with trauma.
