Directs the multifaceted sections, services, programs, and activities of the Office of Communication and Community Relations (OCCR); plans, organizes, supervises, and evaluates all work related to the News, Information and Crisis office within OCCR/Superintendent's Office to include handling media inquiries and acting as the spokesperson for the school division. Works with media, police, fire, and the Office of Safety and Security daytime, evenings, and weekends as necessary; works with school principals to assist in communicating about crisis situations; identifies and collaborates in the development of positive news stories; oversees the Virginia Freedom of Information Act request processes; trains principals and other administrators on best practices in working with the media; advises executive leadership on media strategies; oversees and participates in preparation of the operating budget for the department; and participates in the recruitment, screening, selection, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of personnel assigned.

Qualifications:
Any combination of education and experience equal to a bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, or a related field plus seven years of progressively more responsible experience in the specialty of the assigned office, some of which shall have been in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Master's degree preferred. Can demonstrate knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, functions, and current trends of administration of the OCCR within the Superintendent's Office; ability to manage fiscal, physical, and human resources to successfully carry out the function and programs of the office to which assigned; ability to supervise and lead; capacity to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with personnel assigned to schools, other departments, public entities, and citizens; and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
