General Responsibilities:

The STEM teacher will provide instruction in science, technology, engineering and math.

Essential Duties:

Curriculum Responsibilities:

Provides instruction, support, and supervision to middle school students (grades 5 & 6).

Keeps abreast of all Virginia Department of Education expectations and requirements related to science, technology, engineering, and math instruction.

Participates on science, technology, engineering, and math curriculum teams in the design of course organizers, scope and sequence of units of instruction, and the development of end-of-unit assessments.

Participates in making curriculum revisions/realignment of standards addresses the incorporation of 21st Century Learning Skills.

Serves as a member of the textbooks/resource adoption committee processes for science, technology, engineering, and math.

Gains experience in working with the data management system in order to input/upload all curriculum documents and related materials for teacher access.

Assessment Responsibilities:

Monitors progress on formative and summative science and math assessments and provide guidance and assistance to classroom/program-level teachers in analyzing and utilizing data to improve achievement results of students.

Assists principals and grade-level teams in identifying students who need targeted intervention and/or support structures within the classroom to improve achievement.

Guides and assists grade-level teams in the development of end-of-unit assessments.

Instruction Responsibilities:

Identifies best practices for instructional delivery and provide professional development for science, technology, engineering and math teachers to improve student achievement and engagement in learning (i.e., problem-based learning, engineering design, etc.).

Conducts meetings with classroom/program-level teachers to examine student work and increase the rigor of instruction through improvement of unit/lessons to ensure that students have instruction that embeds higher level thinking skills.

Models best instructional practices/strategies for instructional personnel.

Co-constructs and co-teaches units/lessons with coaches/staff to improve overall instructional practices.

Supports reflective practice and action research to improve achievement for all students.

Assists teachers in designing acceleration and/or intervention strategies to support the learning needs of students.

Provides support to robotic teams, Lego teams, Science fairs, etc.

Additional Responsibilities:

Serves as the primary building-level curriculum lead representative for science, technology, engineering, and math.

Participates in monthly lead science, technology and math teacher meetings with the K-12 Math and Science Specialists and the Director of Instruction.

Works closely with the K-12 Mathematics and Science Specialists within the business and general community to support STEM education initiatives.

Performs additional responsibilities as assigned by the building-level administrator.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong foundational knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math content.

Solid understanding of the Virginia Standards of Learning for Science and Math.

Teaching experience and demonstrate ability in developing and implementing curriculum designed to improve achievement in science, preferred.

An understanding of formative/summative assessment and the ability to assist administrators and teachers in analyzing and interpreting data as it pertains to setting improvement goals and targets.

Solid experience and understanding of best teaching practices related to science and math instruction.

Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with administrators and teachers to meet established goals.

Strong inter-personal relationship skills to support teachers through an instructional coaching model approach to improving science instructional practices.

Strong leadership skills and the ability to assist groups of teachers through curriculum design/alignment, the design and development of formative assessments, and setting school-level improvement goals based on identified learning needs of students.

Familiarity with adult learning needs/strategies and the ability to design, deliver and assess effectiveness of professional development for science and math teachers.

Serves as a role model.

Requisite Education and Experience:

Must possess or be eligible for a valid Virginia Teaching License with a Science, Technology, Math, Middle School Math, Middle School Science.

Teaching experience in science, technology and/or math curriculum preferred.

Experience in curriculum development and assessment design, preferred

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
