General Description

Teaches Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy content and workplace skills to high school students enrolled at the Chesterfield Technical Center. Work is performed at the professional level within specific vocational instructional program guidelines. Students explore the principles and practices of therapists in the healthcare industry and participate in clinical observation under the direct supervision of a licensed occupational therapist. Clinical skills in the areas of occupational therapy enable students to gain understanding of rehabilitative care, which is practiced throughout the continuum of care and across the life span of individuals. After successful completion of this course, students may choose to pursue employment as occupational therapy technicians or may seek higher education for specific degrees/licensure in a variety of fields such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, sports medicine, athletic training, chiropractic medicine, biology, or exercise science.

Teacher Contract + 10 days = 210 days

Essential Job Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Plans instructional program; demonstrates skills, assigns and evaluates coursework. Administers methods to evaluate progress. Records progress and issues reports to students, parents and administrators.
  • Teaches content skills: workplace readiness skills and occupational therapist skills.
  • Provides students the opportunity to participate in HOSA student organization.
  • Teaches process skills: problem solving, critical thinking, teaming, technical writing and communication related to course content and employment.
  • Teaches application skills through personal networked computers, co-curricular activities and school to work transition experiences.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
  • Performs other work as assigned.


Working knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of instruction, learning theory and teaching methodologies. Working skill in computer applications. Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals for students. Demonstrated ability to prepare and monitor budget. Demonstrated ability to provide work direction to others. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other instructional personnel; to communicate instructional goals to others effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated skills in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning.


Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement as an Occupational/Physical Therapy Assistant. To be eligible for a teaching license, candidates must hold a valid license as an Occupational or Physical Therapist issued by the Virginia Department of Health Professions and have a minimum of 2 years of full-time occupational experience.
