Job Title: Transportation - Training and Safety Lead

Job Summary: The job of "Transportation - Training and Safety Lead" is done to improve student achievement through creating a safe environment by performing a variety of duties related to student safety, driver training, community concerns, driver performance, accident investigation and coordination of field activities; providing recommendations to Transportation Coordinator; providing assistance in the hiring, supervision and evaluation of School Bus Drivers; maintaining required documentation for audit in compliance with State Certification purposes and meeting district/state/federal requirements; and filling the position of Bus Driver as may be needed (e.g. during vacations, illness).

Essential Job Functions:
  • Assisting bus drivers through peer mentoring, coaching, and counseling to develop successful student management relationships, communication techniques and skill in dealing with students and staff. Investigating complaints and concerns regarding bus driver performance.Assisting coordinator and supervisor with the assessment of school bus drivers on routes through driving evaluations. Assessing bus drivers pre-trip, school bus stops, driving routine, student management, and other practices to ensure compliance with state and department requirements.Overseeing the coordination and development of transportation training programs in compliance with Oregon Department of Education school bus driver's certification requirements and department needs. Coordinating and monitoring driver trainers and trainer assistants to ensure training requirements are met. Assisting with driver training and testing as needed. Monitoring certification and driving records to assist drivers with timely compliance.Assisting coordinator and supervisor with driver interviews, reference and background checks, monitoring physical exams and guidance through the process of obtaining a CDL and Oregon School Bus Certificate.Establishing and maintaining effective communication and working relationships with District personnel, parents, students, school groups, governmental groups, business, and civic community members.Participating and representing the District and/or Transportation Department on committees and task forces: provide technical assistance as necessary.Serving on the Operation's Safety committee. Conducting investigation of vehicular accidents, job injuries, and student injuries. Preparing reports and making recommendations; investigating and responding to complaints to improve safety and assist in driver success. Developing reports for ODE and Risk management. Investigating validity of requests for route changes due to safety concerns.Attending professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovative techniques in transportation. Utilizing knowledge to develop and coordinate classes and procedures which improve staff development and department processes.Preparing correspondence, reports, and necessary supporting documentation as required.Maintaining regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.Performing related duties consistent with job description and assignment.

  • Assists other personnel as may be required to support them in the completion of their work activities.


Qualifications:

Experience Required:Five years' experience in a public school transportation department including supervision and training experience; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skills to : operate school buses and vans in a safe manner, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, evaluate schedules and meet deadlines, plan and organize activities, administer first aid, maintain records, use English in both written and verbal form, use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation; use standard office equipment including use of basic computer applications.

Knowledge of : Principles and practices of training; provisions of the Oregon Motor Vehicle and Oregon Department of Education Laws; District policies and rules applicable to school bus operation; safe driving and general safety policies and practices; street, roads, and school locations within the District boundary; a variety of vehicles in terms of make, model, power trains including diesel, gas and propane engines; modern office procedures and computer equipment; vehicle operation, basic maintenance requirements, driving codes, and training requirements.

Ability to: sit for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, work independently, make common sense decisions in potentially critical situations.

Significant Physical Abilities include: sitting for extended periods of time. Regular climbing, walking, balancing, lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Frequent twisting, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, grasping, fingering, talking and hearing. climbing/balancing, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations and other sounds, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/field of vision with or without visual accommodation.

Education and Training Required: High School diploma or equivalent.

Licensing/Special Requirements: Valid Class Driver's License and evidence of insurability, School Bus Driver's Certificate, Oregon Fingerprint and Criminal Check clearance, pass pre-employment alcohol/controlled substance tests; will also be subject to random selection for mandatory alcohol/controlled substance testing, First Aid Certificate; ability to pass DOT physical examinations; possess a driving record which meets or exceeds ODE and District standards; obtain ODE Behind-the-Wheel Certification and DMV Third Party Testing Training.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day, 260-day work calendar

Federal Regulations:

In order to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) you must be a permanent resident of the United States or a US citizen.

In order to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Oregon School Bus drivers must meet all federal regulations pertaining to CDL holders. This includes pre-employment and random drug screens. Although the use of marijuana is legal in Oregon, it not legal federally, and therefore a positive drug screen test result for marijuana will disqualify a person from obtaining a CDL.
