Job Summary
This position requires both a valid Alaska administrative certificate and a valid Alaska teaching or Type C certificate. The number of work days is established at 214 and salary depends upon related education and experience. This position is in the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).

The charter school principal reports to and is supervised/evaluated by the Advisory Parent Committee (APC) of the charter school. The principal serves as both an instructional and business leader, manages the facility and finances, oversees instructional and operational staff, engages with students, elevates school culture and morale and represents and promotes the school to parents and the community. The Principal ensures the school meets all local, state, and federal laws, encourages academic and professional excellence, follows the school charter, and guides the school toward meeting its goals. Achieving academic excellence requires that the principal work collaboratively to lead and nurture all members of the school staff and teachers, and to communicate effectively with parents, members of the community, colleagues in other schools, and stakeholders in the school district. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for planning, teacher development, program evaluation, personnel management, financial management, resource scheduling, and facilities operations.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A master's degree in educational leadership, public school administration, or a closely related field, or completion of a school administration / educational leadership program which leads to certification.By start date: a valid Alaska type B administrative certificate with an endorsement including grade levels of the school and a valid Alaska teaching (initial, professional, or master) or Alaska Type C special services certificate.

The following are preferred:
  1. Administrative experience as a principal, assistant principal, or central office administrator.Experience working with diverse groups of students, including exceptional learners, in any combination of K-12 setting.Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of curriculum development as it relates to charter school families and individual needs as well as program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment, and diagnosis, and research related to learning.Experience working with charter school / alternative school educational models.Evidence of:
    • A demonstrated ability to lead an educational organization.A love for charter schools and a desire to enable charter school families to broaden their horizons and educate their children to the highest levels possible.The ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing.The ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with others.The ability to use computers for word processing, budgeting, data management, and communications.

Essential Job Functions
The successful candidate:
  1. Pursues the vision and leads the obtainment of the mission of the school.Provides leadership and direction to staff, vendors, and teachers.Leads the hiring process, evaluates and supervises staff.Guides instruction and supports an effective learning environment.Serves as liaison to the APC Board, works collaboratively with the school staff, and acts as the school representative to internal ASD departments and external entities.Oversees scheduling, enrollment, and curriculum development and implementation.Provides for staffing and professional development to meet students' learning needs.Provides formal and informal reports to the board and ASD.Uses assessment and evaluation data about students, staff, and the community in making decisions.Acts in accordance with established laws, policies, procedures, and good business practices.Ensures proper budgeting, accounting, auditing, and financial planning.Understands the influence of social, cultural, political and economic forces on the educational environment and uses this knowledge to serve the needs of children, families, and communities.Communicates with diverse groups and individuals with clarity and sensitivity.Facilitates the participation of parents and families as partners in the education of children.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
