General Description

Provides classroom behavioral support to teachers in IDP (Intensive Day Program). Performs routine clerical, instructional and behavioral assignments within established procedures and standard practices; requires work with students with emotionally disabilities. The employee is required to provide intervention skills with students. Requires the protection of sensitive and confidential information. Judgment is required. Work is performed under close supervisions of the IDP classroom teacher and/or coordinator. Tasks performed are outlined in oral and written instructions; employee has limited control over work assignments. Contacts are made within and outside the department; may require handling of sensitive information or dealing tactfully with others.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides clerical assistance - typing, filing and maintaining records.
  • Assists teachers with classroom duties, including correcting work, recording grades, planning work and administering tests.
  • Assists students with academic subjects - may assist students one-on-one, small groups, or whole class depending on assignment and individual qualifications; documents progress. Conducts small learning groups under the teacher's supervision and direction.
  • Assists students onto and off the school bus; escorts and supervises students at lunch, recess, resource classes and in the absence of the teacher. Monitors class if teacher must leave room for meeting, etc.
  • Works with students to implement behavior management programs, improve fine motor skills, visual perception, social, vocational and community skills.
  • Give one-to-one attention to a student as a reward or to a student with a behavior problem.
  • Escorts students and restrains out of control students when necessary. Removes students from class for an office referral.
  • Rides bus and addresses behavioral issues while on bus.
  • Completes any necessary behavioral documentation.
  • Attends MANDT Certification Training during non-contractual hours.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and clerical procedures and of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others. Demonstrated ability to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor; to perform basic clerical tasks, communicate effectively orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff and parents in a professional manner.

Requirements

Must meet the qualifications of "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind Act of 2001:
  • Has passed the Paraprofessional Assessment with a minimum score of 455 or
  • Has a minimum of 48 college credits or
  • A minimum of an Associates Degree.
