Period of Employment: 10 months/200 days

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Principal

General Responsibilities: Prepare lessons that support the Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning standards in literacy, mathematics, science, history and social science, health and physical development, personal and social development, music, and the visual arts. The standards are aligned with Virginia's Kindergarten Standards of Learning (SOL) and Virginia's Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS); attend to the basic needs of young children and maintain communication with parents/caregivers.

Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment:

• Develops and utilizes integrated curriculum plans, which reflect the platform and Virginia's Foundation Blocks for Early Learning standards.

• Follows a consistent schedule, which includes small and large group experiences, choice time, music and movement, large and small motor activities, skill development, meals, and effective transitions between activities.

• Encourages experimentation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice-making; ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully to the answers.

• Prepares classroom materials to support developmentally appropriate curriculum plans and activities for school and home.

Parent, Family & Community Engagement:

• Communicates regularly with parents, regarding each child's progress.

• Creates a classroom environment that requires and reinforces parental engagement.

• Conducts routine and required parent/teacher conferences.

• Conducts, plans and evaluates weekly parent training for the school year.

• Works with appropriate agencies in developing specialized planning for children and families as needed.

• Assists with food service, bus monitoring, field trips, and other classroom and student needs as requested.

• Attends meetings, trainings, and appropriate professional development activities.

• Assures general maintenance and security of facility and assists with inventory of equipment and supplies.

• Attends required division and school designated professional development and meetings.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Pre-school (ages 3-5) classroom teaching experience is preferred. Experience should include the ability to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of all children including at risk, special needs, gifted, and culturally diverse populations.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.

• Assume responsibility for continued personal and professional growth in the teaching field.

• Strong skills in effectively blending instructional technology into an early learning environment.

Requisite Education and Experience:

• Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Department of Education Teaching License with an early/primary or elementary endorsement that includes pre-K.

• Experience in computer technology preferred or desirable and/or willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
