JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Clinical Social Worker applies theory, principles and methods to assist in the prevention, assessment, evaluation, formulation and implementation of a plan of action based on student and family needs and strengths. The Clinical Social Worker intervenes to address the mental, social, emotional, behavioral and developmental conditions and disabilities experienced by students and families within our school communities as outlined in the Syracuse School District Practitioners Model for Evaluation. In addition, the Clinical Social Worker will utilize skills and training to diagnose mental, emotional, behavioral and developmental disorders and disabilities within a psychosocial framework on the basis of characteristics consistent with accepted classification systems. The Clinical Social Worker will also provide counseling as defined by verbal methods in interpersonal relationships with the intent of assisting a person or persons to modify attitudes and behavior which are intellectually, socially, or emotionally maladaptive. The Clinical Social Worker will also develop assessment based plans based on diagnosis and psychosocial assessment of the student and assist in school-based planning by providing recommendations for intervention based on this assessment. Due to the necessity of working with families and community-based agencies to provide and/or coordinate comprehensive services for students and families, work hours may at times occur outside traditional school hours requiring flexible work schedule.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide assessment, evaluation and formulate intervention plans based on student needs
  • Provide individual counseling, as indicated, for identified students to address assessed diagnosis and psychosocial issues
  • Provide group counseling for identified students based on assessed needs that could include identification and expression of feelings, development of coping skills for emotional and behavioral regulation, restorative circles, etc.
  • Consult and coordinate with other mental health providers regarding treatment interventions and recommendations to inform student intervention planning
  • Actively participate in meetings with families, school teams and multiple agencies as needed
  • Encourage families to effectively participate in their child's education and social/emotional programming
  • Help families understand school policies, services and programs and encourage their involvement
  • Make home visits as needed
  • Link students and families with school and community resources and assist with referrals as needed
  • Collaborate with school personnel to assess student's social/emotional obstacles to academic success.
  • Collaborate with school teams to develop and monitor Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, Functional Behavioral Assessments and behavior plans and Individual Care Plans
  • Attend parent teacher conferences as needed
  • Complete assessments for students referred to McCarthy Program
  • Facilitate and participate in Student Intervention Team meetings and review data collected at regular intervals
  • Complete social histories
  • Conduct student assessments of danger to self/danger to others as indicated
  • District Crisis Team membership
  • Develop/facilitate/coordinate prevention activities and intervention strategies that include Non-violence services programs and training
  • Provide education and training for staff, as needed, regarding mental health support and intervention
  • Work collaboratively with college/university partners on District initiatives
  • Familiarity with DASA-Dignity for All Act and collaborates with various parties to report or investigate concerns
  • Supervise social work practicum students from local colleges or universities as approved Special Education Department


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work
  • New York State License as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Training and/or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)
  • Provide own transportation throughout the community (mileage is reimbursed with submission of accurate records)
  • Must work up to 20 days, per diem, during Extended School Year, based on enrollment and student need as determined by Supervisor
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire

SALARY/SALARY RANGE:

  • The current starting salary for this position is $48,500. With proof of outside related experience and college transcripts, the salary will be increased pursuant to the Unit 1 contractual agreement.
  • Social Workers who are assigned to work at schools with extended learning time may receive an additional stipend.
