Job Details
The Director of HR Operations oversees and provides best practice guidance in the following areas: payroll, benefits, leave administration, onboarding, audit preparation, and other key HR operations processes. Reporting to the CTO, the DHRO is responsible for managing the HR Operations team.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Directly responsible to:
Develop the Human Resources Operations function and subteam through strong management of direct reports
Serve as a point of escalation on HR operations issues, related to compliance, benefits, leave administration, payroll, etc., as they arise at Mastery schools
Design and communicate a strong calendar for the year's HR activities to ensure coordination within the HR team and across other partnering team
Maintain sound working knowledge of Mastery's compliance with local, state and federal labor and human relations laws and their potential/actual impact on each school unit, including Highly Qualified Teacher and certification regulations
Proactively seek knowledge, expertise in the HR environment, as well as general best practices in business trends and practices impacting Mastery; share this expertise with others
Work in a collaborative and supportive manner to provide strategic direction and support to other members of the HR team
Manages others on operations subteam to:
Update organization-wide HR policies and procedures
Administer payroll
Oversee onboarding and new employee orientation, including related compliance activities
Analyze data from key datasets and surveys
Strategically design a best in class and fiscally responsible benefits and leave programs
Serve as a plan administrator, and/or fiduciary for benefit programs, including 403(b)
Ensure organizational compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and ensures audit readiness
Qualifications:
Demonstrated knowledge of Human Resource best practices, employment law and state regulations

Executive presence and proven capability in coaching others
Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop staff members
Ability to multi-task, problem solve, and manage complex projects in a fast paced environment
Ability to deliver difficult feedback and coach others in doing so
Able to travel to urban based school facilities as needed. Experience in urban schools or other educational settings a plus.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) with at least 10 years of relevant, progressive experience
Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented organization
Working knowledge of PA and New Jersey regulations and employment law preferred
Demonstrated experience in managing others
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as traveling to network campuses and maneuvering in office space-reaching file cabinets, filing, faxing, scanning, coping, typing, mailing, and making phone calls; Must be able to sit for up to two (2) hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard and mouse and typing.
