Job Summary

Provides instruction to students in the areas of assembly, installation and repair of pipes, fittings and residential fixtures for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, drainage, lubricating, sprinkling and industrial processing systems according to specifications and plumbing codes. Employees in this class are responsible for utilizing a variety of instructional techniques to prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills in an entry-level position or apprenticeship in the construction industry or to continue into post-secondary educational programs. Work involves teaching students basic principles and technical skills to support builders and developers and other professionals engaged in the construction of buildings and other structures. Work additionally involves staying abreast of technological advances in the plumbing industry.

Essential Functions
  • Assesses the instructional requirements of students and provides orientation and instruction in plumbing technology career and technical education related competencies.
  • Ensures that industry standards are incorporated into the educational program.
  • Provides training in the proper use of tools and equipment related to the plumbing industry; instructs students in all related (OSHA) safety procedures and plumbing codes protocols.
  • Stays abreast of technological advances in the area of plumbing field.
  • Monitors student progress and assesses their skills according to standardized measurements.
  • Participates in the development of internships and apprenticeships for students enrolled in the Plumbing Technology Program; ensures that students have a variety of school and work-based experiences; oversees students at a variety of job/school sites.
  • Partners with the building trades industry, city of Philadelphia, architects, engineers and building developers in the development of learning and training activities.




Additional Functions
  • Performs related work as required.


Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of current full-time, paid journeyman level experience as a Plumber or Pipe Fitter.


OR

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Seven years of current full-time, paid journeyman level experience as a Plumber or Pipe Fitter.
  • All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of:
    • the plumbing/ pipe fitters and building trades industry.
    • the modern methods, theories and practices in the area of construction.
    • the materials and techniques used in the area of construction.
    • the safety procedures related to the construction industry.
    • the proper care and use of tools and instruments used in construction.


  • Demonstrated ability to :
  • select and organize curriculum content and to apply appropriate instructional methods.
  • implement assessment tools for effective student evaluations.
  • communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • establish effective working relationships.

Certificates/Licenses
Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Vocational/Intern Certificate in Plumbing.
