Distinguishing Features of the Class and HVAC - Direct Digital Control Technician Role

This position exists in a school district and involves responsibility for troubleshooting and repair of commercial air conditioning/heating systems. The work involves programming and repair of direct digital control systems. Supervision is received from the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds with leeway given for independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. The incumbent does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities and HVAC - Direct Digital Control Technician Expectations

  • Develops appropriate operating, repair, maintenance and safety practices for heating, ventilating, air conditioning and related equipment and systems;
  • Makes emergency repairs to equipment and takes emergency action in connection with equipment failure to insure reinstatement of serviceability;
  • Maintains inventory of electrical, plumbing and heating supplies;
  • Maintains work related records and prepares various reports as directed;
  • Performs ongoing preventive maintenance and repairs on heating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, building structure and hardware;
  • Performs adjustments and services all facility operational equipment, such as, but not limited to compressors, pool packs, air conditioning units, heating units, fans and maintains records on operational and maintenance activities;
  • Assists in maintaining grounds, building cleanliness and other related tasks to maintain a safe and clean work environment, such as snow and ice control;
  • Assists in visiting public utilizing the facilities with directions within the district or helps in obtaining and setting sup needed equipment and/or material;
  • May be required to operate a motor vehicle in connection with assignments;
  • Does related tasks as assigned.

Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics and Key Qualities of HVAC - Direct Digital Control Technician Role:
  • Good knowledge of commercial air conditioning and heating systems;
  • Good knowledge of direct digital control systems;
  • Good knowledge of weight, measurement, volume, and distance; ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence;
  • Ability to interpret a wide variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.

Minimum Qualifications:

(A) Graduation from a regionally or New York State College with an Associate's Degree in Heating and Air Conditioning. OR;

(B) Completion of a trade school program specializing in skilled HVAC work with two (2) years of experience as a service technician in the field of heating and air conditioning;

(C) Schenectady County residences get first consideration for the positions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must possess a valid New York State Driver's License at the time of appointment.

This position is a provisional civil service appointment and applicant must meet civil service requirements including residency in Schenectady County. Successful candidates are required to take civil service exam when offered.
