QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated experience coaching the sport at the JV/Varsity level

Teaching certification or the ability to demonstrate a strong understanding of pedagogy

Current CPR/First Aid Certification preferred or have the ability to obtain within two years

National coaching certification preferred (ASEP/NFHS/Other Governing Body) preferred or have the ability to obtain within two years

A strong understanding of basic fundamentals and movements of the sport

A thorough knowledge of current trends, tactics, strategies, and skills of the sport

Ability to communicate effectively with students, coaches, parents, faculty members and administrators

Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds preferred

Availability to organize and implement a year-round training program

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

JOB GOAL: To organize, administer, facilitate and maintain a successful athletic program in the School District of Lancaster

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Adhere to paperwork deadlines – eligibility lists, team roster, transportation schedules, inventory sheets, equipment order forms, assistant coaches' evaluations, and various other paperwork required by the SDoL, LL League, and PIAA

Attend yearly PIAA rules interpretation meeting

Possess a thorough understanding of all PIAA and NFHS rules for the appropriate sport

Attend trainings, clinics, or conferences provided by the athletic director

Delegate duties to coaching staff

Adhere to attendance, eligibility and discipline policies

Collect and inventory equipment

Meet with entire coaching staff, including middle school and McCaskey East coaches, a minimum of twice yearly (prior to the season and at the conclusion of the season)

Provide opportunities for the middle school and McCaskey East coaches to assist in practices at the beginning of the varsity season

Create positive relationships with community organizations and assist in building youth programs which develop fundamental skills and expose young athletes to their sport

Provide input for youth programs that serve as feeder programs for the SDoL

Actively recruit students at McCaskey, McCaskey East, and alternative schools

Maintain student participation during the season

Provide team building activities throughout the year

Ensure that all coaches are positive role models for students

Supervise coaches as they perform delegated duties

Conduct thorough evaluations (written and discussed) of varsity assistant/JV coaches at the end of the season

Participate in the middle school and McCaskey East head coach evaluations

Prepare season-long, monthly, and weekly plans for preparation and improvement (instruction, drill, competition, conditioning, and recovery)

Prepare and communicate a written practice plan for each practice

Create daily practice plans which include clear objectives and organization that reflect season-long, monthly, and weekly plans

Provide time for instruction, drill, and competition as appropriate

Model respect toward athletes, official, opposing team and spectators

Teach respect toward teammates, opposing team, officials and spectators

Provide written communication to athletes and parents which define standards of behavior

Administer consistent, fair and firm discipline

Work in cooperation with SDoL administrators, teachers, and support staff

Develop and demonstrate positive relationships with SDoL administrators, teachers, and support staff

Provide year-round opportunities for athletes in the form of open gyms, camps, and/or competitive leagues

Coordinate with the strength and conditioning coach to provide in-season and out-of-season training opportunities

Promote athletes to collegiate programs

Facilitate active and productive booster club and/or parent organization

Organize and provide in-service, clinic and conference opportunities for middle school, McCaskey East, and McCaskey coaches

Other duties as assigned by supervisor

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

Work with athletes and parents to assist with the selection of the appropriate post-secondary institution

Communicate NCAA eligibility requirements to athletes and parents

Visit McCaskey East and middle school teams during the season

Facilitate the raising of funds through booster club/parent organization

TERMS OF CONTRACT: Hours indicated in SDoL/LEA Contract

EVALUATION: Performance is evaluated per the Athletic Handbook
