Job Announcement: Classroom Teacher on Special Assignment (10 Months, .60 FTE): Sexual Health Education

Basic Functions: In support of the District's strategic direction and full service community school focus, the Sexual Health Education TSA works to develop curriculum and facilitate sexual and other health education programming among identified school sites. The TSA will develop curriculum and organize and lead professional development workshops for teachers and staff to promote and integrate puberty and sexual health education. S/he will complete other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct needs assessment for puberty education, sexual health education and other health education needs among Oakland schools and students.

Develop sexual health curriculum addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ youth, Newcomer students, and students in Special Education;

Research and review existing curriculum and submit recommendations to the Program Manager, HIV/STD Prevention.

Design and lead professional development for teachers to implement sexual health education curriculum.

Coordinate with schools to ensure sexual health education curriculum is taught.

Oversee and provide support and technical assistance to teachers.

Assess options and feasibility for implementing holistic and sequential health education in OUSD.

Provide assistance with grant reporting.

Partner with Program Manager, STI/HIV Prevention to do strategic planning and workplan development.

Partner with Program Manager, STD/HIV Prevention to convene and lead curriculum and materials review committee and Sexual Health Advisory Committee.

Conduct focus groups with teachers and students, as needed, to assess needs and effectiveness of sexual health education curriculum.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor degree and/or five years of increasingly responsible experience in fields of educations, community development, sexual health education, health education, youth development, education reform or other related areas.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

California Clear Teaching Credential with English Learner authorization.

Valid California Driver's License

Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, TB and/or other employment clearance.

Must have access to an automobile during working hours, must move quickly from site to site.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Has experience with sexual health education in a school/classroom setting. Has developed curriculum and lead professional development, and is experienced in group facilitation. Has knowledge of adult learning theory. Has knowledge of District curriculum and school instructional programs. Has excellent interpersonal skills and networking capabilities.

Develop educational materials for K-12 Teachers to use.

Develop and facilitate professional development for Teachers and other staff.

Facilitate group meetings and collaborative efforts.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, staff, students, parents, and community organizations.

Analyze, interpret and communicate data.

Motivate adults to transform their practice.

Support diverse school sites and conditions.

Address the needs of low-income, African American, Latino and/or English Learner communities.

Listen and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Ability to proficiently use a computer and standard applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and email to meet essential duties and responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Indoor office environment and school sites. Driving between sites. Fast-paced work, constant interruptions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Consistent mental alertness; standing, walking, or sitting for extended periods of time; lift/restrain/carry individuals to ensure safety; lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects up to 20 pounds, occasionally 20+ pounds; bending and stooping at the knees; twisting at the waist, and neck; climbing up and down stairs and stepladder; crouching and kneeling; reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally; dexterity of fingers and both arms and hands to perform duties; seeing to read and write to perform duties; hearing and speaking to exchange information, in person or on the telephone, and to make presentations; mobility to go to school sites and prepare physical space for presentations and meetings.
