General Description

Provides bilingual interpretation services to fulfill ESOL department approved official requests. Provides routine clerical and/or instructional assignments for teachers and administrators within established procedures and standard practices. Tasks performed are outlined in oral and written instructions; employee has some control over work assignments. Contacts are made within and outside the school and may require the handling of sensitive information or dealing tactfully with parents, teachers, and staff. Some judgment is required. Each position will have a specific set of work assignments particular to meeting the needs of the students or department being served.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides bilingual interpretation services for ESOL department approved official requests.
  • Assists teachers with classroom duties, including providing small group instruction as directed by the teacher.
  • Assists students with academic subjects; one-to-one, small group, or whole class support.
  • Prepares and reproduces classroom materials; assists with bulletin boards and displays.
  • May assist students on and off the school bus and supervises students at lunch and during the school day in a variety of settings, as assigned.
  • Assists in classrooms and office, provides clerical assistance as assigned - including making requested calls to parents, typing, filing, maintaining records, attendance, ordering supplies and materials.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other work as assigned.


Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of English and of a second language and related cultural differences. Some knowledge of childhood growth and development and behavior management techniques and of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others. Trained in and ability to perform Community Interpreting. Demonstrated ability to provide accurate, complete and clear interpretation services; to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor; to perform basic clerical tasks; to communicate effectively in English and a second language and to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and parents. Demonstrated ability to interpret, explain and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures related to job the assignment.

Proof of Community Interpreter Training and experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Requirements

Must meet the qualifications of "highly qualified" under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. These qualifications are:
  • passing score of 455 on theParaprofessional Assessment, or
  • possession of aminimum of 48 college credits (listed in semester hours) or
  • possession of anAssociate's Degree.

College transcripts orparapro scores must be submitted to be considered for this position.
