Job Description / Essential Elements:

ELK GROVE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

CLASS TITLE: DIRECTOR FOR CURRICULUM AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Associate Superintendent for Education Services and High Schools, initiate and implement curriculum development, textbook selection, other instructional material selection, and direct the integration of professional learning and curriculum implementation. Direct and supervise the Reading Program, Teacher Preparation Program and Graduate Credentials Program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Coordinate, direct, and evaluate the K-12 Curriculum and Professional Learning programs.

Direct the curriculum development process for the district as described by the K-12 Standards and Benchmarks in all curricular areas.

Coordinate the district goals with Curriculum/Professional Learning.

Maintain liaison with the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources regarding professional learning and teacher preparation programs.

Supervise the Curriculum Specialists Program; supervising and evaluating the Curriculum Specialists and Reading Specialists.

Supervise the K-12 textbook program including selection and adoption.

Coordinate with the Director of Research and Evaluation, the use of student evaluation information for assessing and modifying program.

Supervise the adoption and monitoring of new courses to be taught at high schools in the district and the development of the high school course catalog.

Serve as a member of District Leadership Team.

Report on Curriculum/Professional Learning to Cabinet and Board of Education.

Serve as liaison with parents and community members on Curriculum/Professional Learning policies and procedures and developing parent pamphlets.

Articulate with Curriculum/Professional Learning Directors from other district and state agencies.

Schedule and facilitate the Curriculum Standards Committee.

Direct the operation of Curriculum/Professional Learning department.

Manage Curriculum/Professional Learning budgets.

Supervise and evaluate all department directors, managers and staff.

Assist the principals and Associate Superintendents in monitoring the implementation of the curriculum.

Consult with the collective bargaining agent on matters related to Curriculum and Professional Learning.

Secure and make available the literature pertinent to curriculum and professional learning, including the curriculum documents of the State Department of Education.

Supervise and facilitate the Teacher Education Institute and the Administrative Cohort.

Supervise special grants and supporting personnel.

Supervise the development of Curriculum Standards Review Exams for grades 1-11.

Implementing the State Standards and knowledge of state tests.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWELDGE OF:

Curriculum development and review process for programs and instructional materials. Curriculum, instruction and professional learning theory.

Teacher preparation programs and credentialing.

State standards, frameworks, and assessments.

Board policies and District Goals related to Curriculum/Professional Learning.

Principles and practices of modern management.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ABILITY TO:

Facilitate groups of employees and parents.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Select, train, supervise and evaluate staff relative to program objectives.

Establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with individuals, groups, public and private agency personnel.

Coordinate, direct and evaluate the K-12 Curriculum/Professional Learning programs.

Supervise the K-12 textbook program.

Schedule and facilitate the Curriculum Standards Committee.

Manage Curriculum/Professional Learning budgets.

Monitor the implementation of curriculum.

Supervise and facilitate various groups, institutes, academies and cohorts.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Master's degree and management experience with progressively increasing responsibility. Experience in curriculum, instruction, professional learning, teacher preparation programs, state standards, frameworks and/or assessments.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Appropriate California Teaching Credential.

Administrative Services Credential.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
