    Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.

    JOB DESCRIPTION – English Language Learner Program Teacher

    ESOL teachers work under Section 10-17e(3) of the C.G.S. This statute defines English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program as "a program that uses only English as the instructional language for eligible students and enables such students to achieve English proficiency and academic mastery of subject matter content and higher order skills, including critical thinking, so as to meet appropriate grade promotion and graduation requirements."

    English Language Learner (ELL) teachers are specially trained instructors who teach individuals who are not native speakers of English. In Stamford, an ELL teacher may work with students qualifying for bilingual or English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL) services. ELL teachers work with eligible students to provide linguistic and academic support services. The goal of the ELL program is to make the core curriculum comprehensible for ELLs while building language proficiency in English. ELL teachers work by both providing direct services, such as ESOL instruction, and indirect services, such as consultation with classroom teachers and/or monitoring, to eligible students who have proficiencies ranging from new-arrival to native-like (scale of 1-5 on the LAS Links). The primary role of the ELL teacher is to enable eligible students to access academic curriculum and assist ELLs in gaining linguistic proficiency in English. The type of service and the frequency it is provided are student specific and dependent on the student's linguistic proficiency and academic level.

    Educational programs for limited English language learners (ELLs) are regulated by No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Title I and Title III. The ELL teacher receives supervision from building administration and technical supervision and assistance from the Director of English Language Learner (ELL) Programs.

    • Provide instruction for students who are eligible to receive ELL services
    • Modify curriculum so that content is accessible for ELLs
    • Follow a push-in or pull-out model to best service students
    • Provide expertise to building principals and Director of English Language Learner Programs in planning and implementing programs which address the needs and abilities of the identified ELL student population
    • Assist in screening students to determine ELL eligibility and maintains appropriate documentation with the goal of initiating instruction as soon as possible
    • Maintain appropriate documents on screening and assessment of ELLs
    • Consult with classroom teachers as appropriate to support access to curriculum and instruction
    • Monitor eligible students who are at a higher linguistic level in mainstream general education setting, as per state requirements.
    • Check in with academic subject area teachers to ensure that ELLs are doing well in content area classes
    • Provide strategies to content area teachers on how to successfully include ELLs at higher linguistic levels
    • Act as a resource to teachers of ELL eligible students in developing differentiated strategies for students with limited proficiency in English
    • Assist in the annual assessment of identified ELL students as mandated by State and Federal statutes.
    • Communicate with parents / guardians of ELL students
    • Assist the Director of English Language Learner Programs in maintaining records and reports as requested by local, state or federal agencies
    • Work with building administration to develop reasonable schedules for servicing students

    • Connecticut Educator Certificate as required by job assignment: 111-Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), PK–12
    • Experience working with ELL students preferred

    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, teachers, parents and students
    • Superior communication skills (oral and written)
