Whittle School & Studios is an ambitious project to modernize education and build the world's best and most innovative environment for human learning and development. Over the next decade we will be constructing 30 Pre-K-12 schools in the world's most vibrant cities, with   all of   our campuses designed by the renowned architect Renzo Piano. The project is led by education entrepreneur Chris Whittle.

Our first two schools will open in the fall of 2019, located in Shenzhen, China, and Washington DC, United States.   
About the position 
Whittle School & Studios is seeking an experiencedcommunicationsand parent relations professional to serve as the Director of Communications. This position, located in Washington, DC, provides oversight and executes of the communication strategy for the DC Campus of Whittle School & Studios. The Director of Communications works collaboratively with administrators, staff, faculty, and, as needed, outside vendors, to clearly articulate and celebrate the school's unique program and vision of progressive education. This position will be responsible for internal communications, marketing, and parent interfaces with our student information system while also serving as a liaison to our parent organization. This individual Director of Communications will report to Head of School
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:  
  • Write, edit, and proofread articles, proposals, templates, letters, reports, print and electronic communications and publications
  • Oversee, develop and edit content for the DC campus' newsletter and all other campus-focused Communications 
  • Develops and maintains the school's publication calendar (publication dates, deadlines leading to production, specific themes) 
  • Produces communications and publications for internal and external communities: parents, faculty and staff, friends, benefactors, the media, prospective families,
  • Reviews and proofreads written communications from the school community including letters, newsletters and print publications
  • Advises academic divisions and co-curricular programs to support internal and external communication efforts 
Desired Qualifications / Requirements: 
  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications, Journalism (or relevant field) 
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant communications experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong writing and copy editing skills 
  • Strong team orientation and ability to work collaboratively with all members of the school community
  • Photography skill is a plus
  • Ability to write clearly for a variety of audiences and platforms
  • Independent school experience is preferred
