Position Title: Public Communications Specialist

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Director of Public Communications

General Responsibilities: Work with the Director of Public Communications to meet the Division's needs for increasing parental and community involvement and keeping the school division and community informed.

Essential Duties:

Assists in conveying information to the media, principal, and community members as directed by the Director of Public Communications.

Oversees the school division's web presence by collaborating with the school level webmasters and the Supervisor of Instructional Technology and Innovation.

Gathers information to assist the Director of Public Communications with the preparation of news releases.

Provides graphic and technical support for school and district website updates, social media site postings and monitoring, creation of presentation materials and graphic design assistance using desk top publishing software programs.

Represents the school system within the community in a positive manner.

Follows all board policies, school system rules, and administrative regulations for the purpose of meeting the professional standards of the school system in meeting its mission.

Establishes and maintains departmental and/or supervisor's files and performs general office duties;

Maintains, monitors, and publicizes the school board meetings through the use of the public access channel.

Monitors the supply of publications and brochures and notify appropriate personnel of needed reprints or revisions.

Maintains confidentiality relative to student records/information and procedures.

Responds in a prompt and professional manner to inquiries from a variety of sources such as teachers, students, parents, administrators and boosters for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and/or direction.

Writes, drafts, and edits communication pieces.

Maintains and updates fact sheets and other information about Division departments, and programs.

Works closely with Central Office receptionist by providing both technical and physical support.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge and skill regarding public information practices and journalistic procedures.

Able to apply expert verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Able to apply expert analytical, critical thinking, and judgment skills.

Able to recognize the sensitive nature of issues and maintain confidentiality.

Able to interpret and accurately apply written and oral instructions.

Able to work independently.

Able to meet predetermined deadlines.

Able to work cooperatively with employees, parents, students, the public, and the news media.

Able to work on multiple projects or tasks concurrently.

Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Proficiency in word processing.

Serve as role model.

Requisite Education and Experience:

Must possess a Bachelor's degree preferably in communications, public relations, marketing, English, or journalism/media field.

Experience or training in the coordination of public information programs, writing, researching, and the production of news releases and publications.

Experience in design and layout concepts, and desktop publishing such as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite, and knowledge of digital photography, video production, and social networking tools.

Previous experience working with public schools preferred.

Valid Virginia Driver's License preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
