SOCIAL and EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) SPECIALIST

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under the general direction of the Office of Student Services, the SEL Specialist will be responsible for supporting the development of SEL standards and programming District-wide. Using defined standards and evidenced-based practices and resources, incumbent will be responsible for ensuring SEL standards are integrated appropriately into the core content areas. Incumbent will support and organize professional development in the area of SEL, general information, as well as assist the Coordinator of SEL with district-wide SEL implementation and support.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports in developments and implementation of SEL programs; Assists the Director of Professional Development, Counseling & SEL Coordinators, with organizing training opportunities for school based staff and district leadership, provide on-site coaching, grant management and responsibilities and support the implementation of SEL across all levels; Coordinates meetings with campus curriculum cadres, department chairs, and similar teacher teams; Serves as liaison between teachers and administrators and specific community organizations; Provides leadership in the coordination of special events and programs; Ensures compliance with Federal, State, Local, and District policies, rules, and regulations; Disseminates information on current trends and research in SEL; Encourages teacher participation in workshops and conferences; Analyzes data to assist teachers in integration of SEL skills into practice in the classroom.

Perform other related duties as assigned; however, all employees are expected to comply with lawful directives in rare situations driven by need where a team effort is required.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

1. Bachelors' Degree from an accredited college or university in School Administration, Counseling, School Psychology, Special or General Education or related field;

AND

2. Experience: Five (5) years of experience in a position requiring involvement with SEL programming and implementation and/or related field. Experience in school counseling, psychology and/or teaching is desirable.

AND

3. Qualification into the Teacher Leadership Program is required.

Knowledge of:
This position requires knowledge of social and emotional learning (SEL), knowledge of program development and coordination, implementation, and evaluation. Must have knowledge of working with grants and/or grant management. Knowledge of SEL curriculum, coordinated school health, curriculum integration, and supporting teaching and learning is important. It is desirable to possess professional development experience in SEL.

Communicating and collaborating with groups and individuals; conflict resolution and consensus building; researching best practice; planning, organizing, assigning and coordinating the activities of a professional and support staff; presenting ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing; dealing effectively with people within the community; team building; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and staff supervision and administration. This position requires knowledge and skill in the use of personal computers and their software. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and in other computerized applications.

Licenses/Certificates
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Nevada teacher license in a relevant subject area and/or grade level, or a Nevada license with a school counselor endorsement.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year.

Additional Job Information:
This position is grant-funded and is contingent upon continued funding. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the grant without re-advertising.

Qualification into the Teacher Leadership Pool is required. If there are no qualified candidates in the Teacher Leadership Pool who meet the job specific qualifications, a candidate can be hired with a provision that they qualify into the Teacher Leadership Pool within the first year.

The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and will have $55.00 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
