SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Provide educational services for children with developmental disabilities who are visually impaired. Manage records of student progress and communicate effectively with parents, staff, students and human service professionals.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
Reports to the School Principal
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide educational services to visually impaired toddlers, pre-schoolers and school aged children on an itinerant basis as these services are mandated by the school district in which the child resides. Assure that IFSP/IEP mandates are fulfilled.
  • Identify and assess the need for services of all blind and visually impaired students through formal testing, informal assessments and teacher observation.
  • Formulate long-term goals and short-term objectives and implement all goals on each student's IEP.
  • Write individual and group lesson plans which target IEP objectives.
  • Implement instruction of students in such areas as conceptualization, sensory stimulation, tactile and auditory discrimination, daily living skills, environmental awareness and academic skills.
  • Provide clear and succinct direction to students.
  • Order appropriate materials for implementation of individual curriculums and adapt and make instructional materials for each student as required.
  • Advise and consult with classroom teachers, other staff members and parents as necessary to effectuate curriculum and service requirements.
  • Engage students in activities that are interesting, meaningful and individualized to reflect each child's developmental level.
  • Help each student to mature academically, emotionally and socially.
  • Provide care and instruction to promote a safe environment for students.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Organize and maintain daily, weekly and/or monthly notes, reports and/or records required for each student.
  • Establish an effective data collection and charting system to monitor students' progress.
  • Document progress toward goals on the IEP, at specified intervals (e.g., 3 months, 6 months, etc.)
  • Provide information on each student's progress to appropriate family members and human service professionals.
  • Utilize Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP) procedures when necessary.
  • Advocate for each student when he/she cannot advocate for himself.
  • Maintain a current inventory of all CCL equipment and supplies in the room. Ensure that equipment and supplies are used appropriately. Submit maintenance requests when necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the room and its contents.
  • Consistently comply with all agency policies and procedures.
  • Constantly maintain high professional standards at work with regard to personal behavior and interaction with other staff and families.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive communications with family and caregivers.
  • Promoting the Agency so more students with visual impairments can become part of the program.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Principal and/or Director of Education.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • High level of oral and written communication.
  • High level of interpersonal skills.
  • High level of behavior management skills.
  • High level of knowledge of educational principles, especially those that apply to students with disabilities.
  • Possess good time management skills.
  • Knowledge of computers to prepare monthly lessons and progress reports and educational materials needed.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
  • Must possess a BA or BS degree.
  • Provisional certification in the teaching of the blind and partially sighted (either from New York State Education Department or accepted by them). Permanent certification must be obtained and documentation substantiating same provided to the Agency within five years of provisional certification, unless a shorter duration is required by law.
  • An acceptable background check.
